The HL2 Cinematic Mod is the funniest thing in the lore of the series. Funnier than HL3 never coming out.
The idea is so good. Better sound effects, denser levels, improve the graphics. Intensify what's already there. Make the game pop! I get it.
But the character model changes.. I really, honestly wonder if the creator is on crack or obsessed with airbrushed, plasticy models. It's a clear example of letting his fetishes and neurosis get the better of him. They look horrible, unrealistic, and disgusting out of place in the Source engine. Dude is like the Michael Bay of modders.. has this 14 year old boy idea of what people should look like.

It's not like he makes them himself, he just steals models created for porn animations.
The first editions of the mod weren't terrible. Higher res stuff, nothing crazy.
Then the model changes came. Different outfits for Alyx.
Then replacements for Alyx.
Then ferns. And uguu-Breen.
There was a point where they should've stopped but they just sped by it and held down the accelerator.

Thankfully he made it really customizable. Default character models makes it more bearable and lots of areas look better despite the BRIDGES and FERNS.
I didn't like the music though. I dunno if it was changeable or not.

you don't have to replace any of the NPCs, you can just get the mod for the high resolution & post processing and all of that. aside from ferns and the NPC changes that are hysterically bad, the cinematic mod really does make the game look better than its 2004 iteration, and its obvious that the person who first designed it put a lot of care into his work.

The problem, though, is that he clearly intends for the models to be left in as a "full package" deal. Even on his website, he prominently advertises the new models. They are clearly--in his malformed eyes--an upgrade, and are now the poster children for the mod itself.
Since they are so universally despised, the respect the mod receives as a whole is greatly diminished, to the point of outright hatred and ridicule with no wish to see any redeeming qualities. He dug his grave, now he has to lie in it. Them being optional doesn't undue how huge a travesty they are. Their mere existence is a blight.

About 3-4 years ago I bumped into a strange but friendly man in CEX. I was checking out some PC games with agirland this old man with a white beard comes up to me and recommends getting one of the Stalker games. I told him that I had heard good things about them. A long-ass conversation about games ensues, but he had asked me if I'd played Oblivion. I told him I had and that I enjoyed it a lot, especially modding it. Turns out, he was a well recognised modder in the community, but unfortunately I can't remember the name(s) of the mods he had worked on. He had a lot of negative things to say about certain members of the community which meant nothing to me. If I had to describe the man, imagine a homeless father Christmas. He was carrying a tonne of miscellaneous objects in a transparent bag over his shoulder. His demeanour was friendly, but also very intimidating. He looked around late forties or fifties.
TL;DR Modders are strange but interesting people.
