As someone with at least a thousand hours in Dota and League I will tell you, League is casual shit fest.
It does require knowledge of the skillsets however, you need to know exactly how long the slows and dots and how much damage champs are doing based on the equips they have, and whether or not you have a chance to gank or run away from them.
But as far as the skill set goes, if any champ can be played with any set of equips and in any style, then it's not really that challenging.

Let me put it this way: In order to get to play with diamonds, you need to play thousands of matches unless you are really good at the game (then you can get there with a few hundreds). I assume you only played against diamond players because you had a friend that was already diamond, so you duo queued normal games. But guess what? No one takes normal games seriously, most people try funny builds and break meta or simply don't put their efforts on it. I know that because I suck at normal games, but when playing ranked I am sort of a tryhard and end up doing really good, and most of my friends are like that.

If you stay in it for even a second that's like 25% of your hp and if you stay there for 2 seconds or more that's like 50-75% of your hp if you are not a tank. Its ridiculously broken.
