How to be a good healer:
Step 1: Learn your role.
What is the healer's role?
"Heal people"? No. That's far too simplistic.
The healers role is to support enough of the group to clear the content.
You don't get a special star for everyone always having full health. In most games, you don't get a special star for everyone always being alive.
Focus on your role; don't get distracted by the other things.
Step 2: Learn aggro mechanics.
You can do zero healing when you're dead. Don't pull aggro.
Is aggro based off healing? Manacost? Per-skill values? Does overhealing increase aggro? Do buffs/debuffs cause aggro? How do your tanks build aggro? These questions will have different answers depending on what game you're playing.
When the rogue accidentally pulls, do you heal him, drawing aggro and potentially wiping the party, or just let him die and aggro reset?
Step 3: Learn your class
Which heal is most mana efficient? Which heal is fastest? Which heal draws most aggro? How are you expected to manage your resources? Do you have shields? HoTs? Buffs? Cleanses? Resurrection?
When you aren't healing, what should you be doing? DPS? Waiting for mana regen?
Step 4: Learn everyone's class
Who has least health? Least defense? Who should you be healing first? Who has skills that cost HP? Who has skills that debuff themselves? Who has an invincibility skill?
Step 5: Learn content
When do you need to heal big hits? When do you need to preheal? When does aggro reset? What mechanics do you need to handle?
That should probably be enough to get started.

Listen to the tank you are assigned to in a raid. We are not a bunch of faggots, and we can help you with macro/healing rotations. But generally just learn the fight, have hots on the raid at all time and time-cast your big heals on tanks, when they are about to take a big hit, or have a lot of boss-dots on them. We are, after all, a team. And generally just try to learn your cooldowns and rotation, that always helps.

People just want to be led. It is a natural instinct of theirs. You can appeal to it from any position if you simply have the confidence and find the right people. Just know what buttons to press- that doesn't necessarily mean being a dick all the time.
To truly understand submissives you need to understand how people tick. You can't just bitch people out all day and expect knees to shake. You need to give them GOALS, you need to have expectations of them, you need to control them, you need to shock and surprise them so they always want more of the rollercoaster.
Just imagine it, letting yourself go to a master and forgetting about all your worries. Being bossed around on your tank from the healer then rewarded after the dungeon. Imagine being actually congratulated for once on your dps. Or of course, being told to meet the bar of good heals or you wont get the surprise your master has cooked up for you. "You'll never know what it is if Paladin dies during this next boss!" Imagine the drive it instills in someone.

This is good aside from the aggro mechanics part. The healer shouldn't give a shit about who pulls off the tank because if a dps pulls off, then the tank needs to be kicked from the group for being complete trash.
And if you aren't padding your numbers to dominate the other healer/s and still clearing the content, then the whole raid is trash and you should find a new group

I phrased most of the aggro parts as a question because they're almost all game-specific. I hear WoW tanking is easy shit now, but in some games, DPS who can't pull aggro when they try are the real trash.
I disagree that the healer shouldn't give a shit. Other players will always make mistakes, and healers are in one of the best positions to recover the group from them.
By "padding your numbers", do you just mean overhealing? If you're bored running easy content, you should be putting in DPS to clear it more quickly.
