As a Fire Emblem protagonist? They'll be a blank slate just like Robin was. It's hard to judge a character whose actions will be based on your own.
As a Smash character? Glad they're not another Marth clone, upset that FE got -another- rep while other franchises got the shaft. I know they were added solely to advertise Fates (just like how Shulk was added solely to advertise Xenoblade 3D), but it's still ridiculous.

Smash 64 is the only REAL Smash game
Most disappointing newcomer for me. It's probably not fair to complain, considering how many characters I really wanted made it in, but I couldn't bring myself to get excited over this one. I understand the character has a 'unique moveset' what with the dragon/chainsaw thing, but I think that any newcomer was pretty much guaranteed to have a 'unique moveset' anyway. For me it just comes down to him/her being another boring stock-standard FE character: stoic, noble anime royal with the cliched "I will never give up" and "I won't let you!" attitude. I don't know, they just feel so generic and bereft of any character to me. I've never played Bayonetta, but she just oozes personality and style and I'm really excited to play her (I think her unique mechanics are more interesting, as well). I'm not going to whine about who they should've added in, since I'm overall pretty elated with the final roster, but for me personally, I'm not a fan.

Xenoblade Chronicles and the New 3DS came out a couple of months after Smash did. Shulk was added to bring casual attention to the fact that the game exists because the original release of Xenoblade was incredible niche, especially in America.

Sakurai is extremely biased. Just look at how series with his involvement and series we know he likes and even has relation with their devs have clear priority:
Personal involvement: Kirby (This one is ok), Kid Icarus (TONS of KI shit in the game, Palutena gets special treatment)
Known fan: Fire Emblem, Xenoblade (Promotion helped here too)
Friendies: Kamiya, Kojima
I'm actually okay with it tho. Is his game after all. I'd put my favorite Pokemon instead of the edgy humanoids if it was my decision.

I think the only time there was a notable Kirby bias was in the SSE. I've never really had a huge issue with Kirby representation in Smash otherwise. The KI stuff got a bit ridiculous, and FE has gone well past that point, though.

Considering all the collaboration Nintendo's had with Koei Tecmo recently (Fatal Frame, Hyrule Warriors, a bunch of Wii U ports and Other M, just off the top of my head), I always thought Ryu Hayabusa had a real chance. Sort of running out of notable retro 3rd party characters that could conceivably happen, so maybe Smash 5?
