Astraea wasn't fixing anything. She was only offering relief by performing some soothing spells. She was remedying the symptoms but not attacking the source of the corruption.
She was using a demon's soul, in order to perform the miracles. The problem with this, is that because everyone in the valley is dying from the plague, she's absorbing all of the souls, which in turn makes her demon's soul more powerful, which then allows her to perform more miracles, which attracts more people seeking relief, which allows her to collect more souls.
This cycle was ensuring a steady flow of souls to be fed to the Old One. Who uses demons in order to collect souls. All demons are a envoys of the Old One. Whether they know it or not.
Astraea learned the true nature of the Church's god.(It being the Old One) And that's why she defected from the church in order to pursue her humanitarian efforts. Because she thought that by dedicating herself to god, she was doing the right thing.

I used to think that. But wasn't the Valley in it's poor state before she went down there? If she went down there first, and then everything started getting the plague, it would be pretty obvious that she's bad, and no one would like her. But instead, she's being worshipped for offering relief to an already preexisting problem.
I think it's more likely that she's using herself as a siphon for for the plague. Hence, it's all streaming down to her. Also by the fact that liquid is going to seek the lowest point, it makes sense that all the worst things eventually muck it's way down to that point.
I still think what she's doing is ultimately harmful. And that she has some knowledge of what she's doing. But also, she continues to do what she does out of misguided faith, with a hint of corruption.

Since Rance uses multiple weapons in the course of the series, a Rance build from what I've done is flexible aside from not using many if any magic and only using shields rarely. Item usage is okay since Rance is resourceful and likes to cheat. Stats should just lean towards STR/VIT with some points into Dex and whatever else you need to equip certain weapons.
Since Rance is unique in that he can break the level 99 limit, making yourself stupidly overleveled with grinding isn't out of character.
In the Souls series weapon wise I've always used Artorias - Majestic Greatsword to represent Chaos as my "ultimate weapon". It also fits since he sometimes lefthands his sword. In Demon Souls I used the Northern Regalia.
Armor is just whatever is green and silver. Dark Souls 1 was bad for this so I just used Black Knight to represent his more kichikuou look. Demon Souls mixed Ancient King, Dark Silver. Dark Souls 2, Drangleic transitioning to Faraam.

It has a frustrating entry period, that's what you should criticize it for. The entire fight's difficulty is centered around killing the four rats as quickly as possible so you can focus on Si- the giant rat.
I found it really annoying at first but I adjusted by using those pyro mines for once. Another playthrough I switched to claymore to try and sweep several at once and it worked alright.

The problem with it is that if you weren't ranged you had to pray to the gods your melee weapon could sweep them and because they were so small your weapon might just hit 1 and sweep right across the top of the others and do shit all.
