Game changes a lot when you upgrade from charging zergs to pulling off hammer and anvil tactics. While you're at it might wanna look up mods that make enemies fight in ranks/formations too. Entirely changes the game.

If you had a throwing weapon build you win. Better than bow and arrow in my opinion as even if you're a top-tier archer you still get fucked in close quarters with your shit practice dagger (although you can juke the dumb AI and drop them with your bow if you know how).
If you're on a horse you could easily win with your fists by just driving the dumbass AI to ride into the wall.

Considering the amount you can carry and that most people use a shield, throwing weapons are useless.
Also the best thing you can do at the beginning is roll with a party of 5 at max, preferably companions and do nothing but trading for loads of money and delivery quests for exp.
I did nothing but trading until I had 150.000 denars. Money is power.
At least with javs you can press x and turn them into a shitty polearm. If you get a bow without a horse, you're trully fucked

The most fun you can have is slog it with your men as a heavy infantryman, never buying any gear, ever, and never recruiting mercenaries.
Just get peasants, upgrade them all down the heavy infantry route, and sit in tight formation, grinding down the enemies.
tournaments in ad1257 were extremely easy because you entered with your own equipment, really I prefer the vanilla tournaments since you can at least sometimes lose
