Both do room-scale fine, and both support using more than 2 stations. At least with Oculus (haven't heard from Vive, though I expect them to be similar), using more cameras can be used to increase the tracking volume.

HTC Vive wins if it less than $599. But it also wins if its a more robust hardware thats under $800

You're already putting $900 to $1200 on VR ready gaming PC. When you're willing to put that much on it, plus $600, its better to go for higher tech version with extra $200.

Oculus Rift is a budget version of luxury. Its basicly for people who pretend they can afford luxury.

Rift just shouldn't have gone over $450, because thats where the console market is at and willing to pay.
>>
>>323215932
That's a hell of a compelling case you've displayed

I don't know how I can ever hope to refute any of those well researched points
>>
>>323216714
There are conflicting reports coming from people who tried both at CES. Some say the Rift's screen is better, some say Vive's is better. Some say the tracking was better on VIve, other says they're identical. Some said they had technical issues with their Vive demos.

If you don't want to commit to one right now, wait until the consumer Vive and Oculus Touch are both out and make a decision then.
>>
>>323217168
Yes, they do. Glasses don't just refocus, they cause a a slightly wider FOV to be compressed into a smaller one, at least for short-sighted people. Far sighted ones and reading glasses have the opposite effect.
>>

>I don't know how I can ever hope to refute any of those well researched points

This is aimed for pc gamers all the way trough, rift is luxury VR just has better specs cause its coming out later.
>>
>>323213938
vive is going to be more expensive, but its much closer to virtual reality than the rift will ever be. the two towers, the two controllers, the headset, the ability to walk around within a small environment, its all much better. Plus, if they will release the headset on its own for cheaper or the same pricepoint.

The question now is why get the Oculus when the VIVE does everything better and has more options.

sony is the only one actually improving VR by giving it built in hardware. You won't need a 6000$ gaming pc with Sonys VR. It will just work, also sony is the only one pushing technology while Rift and Valve are just using software tricks and HQ monitors to make their VR.

Why don't they just make the screens upgradeable?
Can't be that difficult to use something like Display Port, except smaller, and having a connector inside the VR goggles and one on the screens.
If a better screen gets released, take out your obsolete one and replace it with the new one.

Maybe that's Vive's huge breakthrough and why their CEO talked about the Vive being an investment.

It's still pathetic.

I can just envision the fat, balding manchild pleading to his wife like a child to his mother, as his golddigging wife waggles her finger at him before laughing him off to go take twenty dicks behind his back. Meanwhile, the husband, overjoyed, waddles over hastily to his computer to share the wonderful news with his internet surrogate buddies, eagerly looking forward to his new kid's toy while his wife continues to treat him like the juvenile, pathetic little manchild he is, siphoning dough from his wallet to pay for the chlamydia treatments from all the extensive cuckolding. Fucking faggot. If it was up to me I'd urinate on that worthless fag. I would wipe my shoes on his face. Then, I'd do him a solid and put one metal slug in his dome. Man, it makes me kinda sad how people are reacting to the Rift being expensive and the Vive being better (in terms of features and included hardware, no one really knows which consumer pro duct is better because no one has tried the consumer rift or consumer vive).

People who had all this faith in Oculus want the Vive to be bad, but no one has any idea at the moment. Just goes to show how strong cognitive dissonance is—people will passionately defend or shit-talk either product, having tried neither, just because they are emotionally and/or financially invested in one.

Anyway, I hope the Vive is better because I'd rather my money go to Valve than Facebook, but if it's not I'll buy a Rift.

Enjoy your drama and shitposting <3

There is no such thing as financial investment in the Rift. It's a preorder that doesn't even charge your card until it ships. If Vive turns out to be better, you can just cancel. Exactly what I plan on doing.

Who cares about Rift vs Vive.
What matters is that Valve built the groundwork for ANY hardware company to make their own Lighthouse VR system which is both superior and cheaper than IR cameras.

It automatically wins in the long term.

If you think you're actually getting that in 2016 you're delusional. Remember when Oculus said they were going to launch in 2015?

Probably not so much considering 8k at 60fps is nearly impossible if at all
>>
>>323236708
I would say that the lateral movement is so that when you move your head in real life sideways, it registers in the game. Unlike the Rift, where your head is mounted on a stick with a gun.
>>
>>323237685
That's wrong, though.
>>
>>323237468
Foveated rendering would fix that. Also you need 90fps.

It's a terrible purchase even if it takes 2 years for Rift/Vive 2.0.
There are still many things that need to be improved, 1st gen sets will look pathetic compared to 2nd gen.
And all you can do with 1st gen is twiddle your thumbs while you wait for games to be released.

You dumb? It's wireless UP TO 8k, it doesn't matter if it's 2k right now, it will still work wirelessly.

The Rift is compatible with OpenVR, right?

Wouldn't that mean that the Rift can play all VR games whereas the Vive is limited to the ones made with the OpenVR SDK?
>>
>>323236708
>vive's only benefit is walking around, i.e. a gimmick

You've never used VR before if you think walking is a gimmick. It makes a big fucking difference, it's the difference between actually feeling (presence) there as VR should be and just feeling really immersed, unless it's a cockpit game.

>>

There are MMOs that support VR already, like Elite Dangerous.
>>
>>323239251
A lot of people wish we would sell a bundle without “useless extras” like high-end audio, a carrying case, the bundled games, etc, but those just don’t significantly impact the cost. The core technology in the Rift is the main driver - two built-for-VR OLED displays with very high refresh rate and pixel density, a very precise tracking system, mechanical adjustment systems that must be lightweight, durable, and precise, and cutting-edge optics that are more complex to manufacture than many high end DSLR lenses. It is expensive, but for the $599 you spend, you get a lot more than spending $599 on pretty much any other consumer electronics devices - phones that cost $599 cost a fraction of that to make, same with mid-range TVs that cost $599.
>>
>>323239207
That was already ripped apart in the previous thread.
It has angle and range problems which pretty much break the experience.
And Oculus doesn't even support it officially so don't expect a single room-scale game for Rift.

You are comparing a room setup to a seated one. If you want a room experience with oculus you will need to do the same and put each camera in a corner.
>>
>>323239647
What in the SDK shows support for room scale? All it is is the camera's having a wide enough FoV to track is all.
>>
>>323239647
At what maximum range? Because the tracking quality drops off in precision very quickly the farther you are.
There IS a reason why the CES 2016 demos are confined to a tiny square, you know.
>>
>>323239534
Not to mention you need to set up the camera's in opposite corners to have it really work. Not as easy as with Lighthouse which only needs a power connection.

It is mostly constrained by system noise. The current implementation has enough power to track beyond 6 metres range from a base, but the quality of the fix degrades with range. How much is complex. There are interacting trade-offs surrounding limits on eye-safe optical power, choice of carrier frequency, spin rate, spin jitter, sensor bandwidth, sensitivity and noise, etc. With today's implementation of Lighthouse we are mostly constrained by what all of those end up looking like: Noise in the reported bearing angles of each sensor. A reasonable figure is say 50 microradians 1-sigma, even if it is often better than that.

The tracking quality just isn't good enough, read the article from 2015, the cameras can't track close to the ground for example and that was just from a quick demo, so imagine what other problems it might have.

And that's not even factoring in the fact that IR cameras are more expensive than lighthouse stations.
>>
>>323239934
Thanks to the DK2 reverse engineering and github code Oliver Kreylos published, we know a lot more about the actual Oculus DK2 tracking than we know about the Lighthouse devkit implementation. Oculus did not document emissions and driver interfaces, but their systems does not lend itself to 3rd party solutions due to the need to sync and ID the markers.
If you want to foster interoperability after the fact, documenting emissions and driver interfaces once the hardware is on the shelves is quite possibly going to fall short of facilitating/encouraging conformance when it mattered. In that case, you will have to count on having clear license to the IP.
>>
>>323240326
>cameras on the same wall
Okay.
>>
So I was thinking.

Anyone know the specifications of the Vive front-facing camera?

I'm assuming it uses IR?

We can scan models with those cameras. It's completely feasible to scan your dick while watching POV animu porn, import your dick and live animate to your movements and have the animu character react to it.

I'm a developer working on Intel RealSense tech, so yes it's possible; I promise.
>>
>>323240329
Aaaand what does that have to do with room scale?
>>
How is an R9 290 enough to run the Rift?

I have that card and it struggles to run Fallout 4 consistently at 60fps on max graphics.

For the rift to work it would need to run at fucking 95fps TWICE
>>
>people saying oculus doesn't support room scale

This, and the Rift's touch controllers will have better battery life. It's a trade off. Focusing on 5x5 makes more sense considering HTC has literally no actual games to show off for room scale.

>>323240441
Cameras on opposite walls won't fix its vertical fov problem and if it really was better then why didn't they ever show a fully working room scale demo? That would stop Vive dead in its tracks.
The answer is obvious: the tracking quality for room-scale is not satisfactory.
>>
>>323240819
>Rift's touch controllers will have better battery life

Do we know at all what the battery life is like? I haven't seen any reported info. It could be worse than the Vive, they aren't commenting on it.

They did, it was called Toybox. They've been showing it off since Crescent Bay.

In theory, same can be said for VIVE.
Add two more lighthouses to each area you want to walk to.
Problem for me is that Im poor and dont have any rooms that are 15x15.
My room that I game in at most has 6x6ft so either headset would work.
But if my wife would let me set up lighthouses and my PC in the living room that might be a different story, but shes happy to keep me contained in the office/gaming room as it is.

You can't accurately track your position in 3D space simply with gyros and stuff.
>>

2 cameras means less occlusion. Let's say you place your hand in front of you and your back to the camera, the camera won't see your hand (in case of Touch for example). This is simplified, but ti's the idea of occlusion.

Additional cameras also means bigger tracking space, as you can orientate the cameras' field of view so that they see more of your room, allowing you to move more (should you want to).

Both systems have the same output and controls, it's simply a matter of hooking up both SDKs properly with minimal changes at worst.

VR is a niche market so no developer will be stupid enough to only support one system if not absolutely necessary.

As for lists of compatible games Vive's is smaller because its dev kits are a lot more limited in quantity and it came out later.
When both systems are out expect a very similar list for both.
