/vg/ was necessary because everybody was fucking sick of the constant SC2/LoL threads up on the main page every day. Now I can check it out whenever there's a game I like to play that's out and get to see how people like it. Also home to shitloads of tripfags who all think they're important, so sometimes not great for discussion.
/vp/ has expanded and it needs its own board now, but there's absolutely no reason Moot shouldn't have just made them go to /vg/.
You forgot about /vr/, as did most other people, but I honestly think it's one of the best boards on the site. There isn't a single fucking shitposting thread there, and there probably hasn't been one on there for months. Honestly surprised how decent the community is on there. Probably because nobody notices it all that often (including me)
Onto /v/, the place that can't be saved. There is SO MUCH fucking shitposting here it's unbelievable. Honestly worse than /b/ when I check it for porn, because at least on /b/ it's ALLOWED there.
Every day there's:

>Pictures/Webms of cringe shit
>Console wars

And the mods keep saying they're policing this place, but nine times out of ten these threads go straight to the post limit. /v/ is /b/ except worse, because people actually try and discuss shit and their threads about video games get pushed off the board for more threads about what Brianna Wu said on Twitter. It's a fucking nightmare to navigate it.
It's improving though; Hiro putting wordfilters on Black Twitter lingo increased post quality dramatically overnight.

/vm/ - video games meta (or something to that effect)
for console wars, filename threads, twitter bollocks threads and anything thats only "technically" on topic on /v/. Then /v/ can be used to discuss, you know, actual video games. After that maybe /vp/, /vr/ and /vg/ can be condensed into fewer boards, but I wouldn't know how to handle that.

I don't think that would work. There are too many cross platform games to get rid of console warriors entirely. I do think a larger effort to remove or segregate shitposting could do good though. It wouldn't make the board dry or boring, it'd just remove the worst offenders that encourage newfags to do the same.
A permanent sticky wouldn't go amiss either, regardless of whether the board is actually split to just remind people what /v/ is for.
