the problem isn't just the reading, it's the fact that for the 50% of the game where you're not reading, you're just sitting there watching your party walk between npcs, or stuck in the godawful combat. there's barely even any gameplay associated with the reading either. 95% of the time getting the best results from dialogues is just a matter of starting the game with 18 wisdom and then picking the wisdom option every time it appears on the list.

I don't remember another game other than this and Fallout 1 (maybe 2? Don't remember) where you can literally talk the big bad into killing themselves/merging with you if your Wisdom and Charisma were high enough. Nothing lets you do that anymore.
Granted, ME1 you could talk Saren into blowing his brains out but you still had to have a bossfight with Sovereign.

I'm still in Sigil as well, and the town as a whole has been pretty boring. The main things keeping me going are the fact that I invested an hour or two just installing mods coupled with how much I liked the tutorial area. At first the wards didn't seem interesting (info dumps before you've built an interest in the setting always suck), but I loved how there was so many little things you could do or say. Going through it expecting the same level of effort as most of the RPGs I've played would've made me miss a ridiculous amount of experience and items. Every time I go back there I find something I missed.

I liked mage cuz some spells wreck shit, and a lot of the party members can compliment a mage main. That being said, it's totally player preference. Usually people play with high Wis and Int so mage just makes sense.
