There are some things wrong with turn based combat but its like any other system. With poor implementation its more of a tactical barrier, it can be easy to get fucked out of doing anything (see pokemon) and its just not the most exciting way to run battles. It is functional however and serves a lot of games very well, just don't make wild claims that its flawless. That's not true of anything
the biggest pro of TB based systems is control.
You can control as many units as you want without fear of them being AIs making retarded choices.

And if jrpgs aren't your thing then most old school western rpgs like the original Fallout or KOTOR are excellent turn based games. Also Divinity Original Sin is a more recent example and it's pretty good.

This might come down to design or personal choice, but I was at home (my childhood home) for a week and a bit over Christmas, away from my PC. But I have a PS3 and PS2 at home with a few games I've yet to complete, so I decided to make it a project of mine to play a bit of them. I decided to do Tales of Xillia on PS3 and Dragon Quest VIII on PS2.
Essentially I was enjoying Xillia, but the combat was a bit... eh. It just felt a bit mushy. There there wasn't much decisiveness to my decisions. The harder battles felt at best like a brief war of attrition, with loads of shit happening on screen and my actions were just pulling the battle either way gradually.
Coming to DQ8, I was blown away. It's arguably the simplest TB combat but it's so fucking satisfying. Plotting each characters attacks in order to take down the bosses, the small numbers of health and damage making every hit in a battle feel like it means something. Having to actually use all your parties limited abilities in order to overcome the bosses. It was just great fun. It reminded me of playing D&D as a teenager, with every move having to be considered or the DM would wipe you with a sly smile.
It's why I have almost zero hype for Final Fantasy XV. It just looks like the same mushy slog out that's all style.
