The DLC was good but I feel that Gaunter was the weakest part of it. Extremely predictable and even downright annoying at times. He could have been more menacing and it feels like the writers also felt like that toward the end when they forced his character to commit murder without directly and without a proxy where they established his character beforehand as working only through a proxy. They should have left the option for Geralt do be able to refuse him from the start so he could fuck with the witcher indirectly through a few sidequests before he's forced to accept.
But overall one of the best DLCs ever. Vlodimir was the best part.

Its entirely standalone. The game even gives you the option of starting pre-leveled with appropriate gear and just having access to the related content.
The base game was my GOTY but I didn't enjoy Hearts of Stone.
I found it downright boring.
