How did such a niche game succeed and even get a rerelease on PS4?

Because Koei Tecmo games don't have that high of a budget to begin with. They don't need to sell 10 million to make even. And they still manage to make good games.

Deception IV doesn't even look bad graphically so I guess they do it by not paying too much on cinematics, mocapping, and by having smaller areas
loved that game, getting 100% completion on nightmare princess was a literal nightmare
especially fuck getting S rank on that stage where you can only use long range hits or insta-fail

I couldn't really get into the game. Absolutely loved Deception III but hated IV for some reason.
The Deception series is one of my favorites.
I really hope the series goes on, but I really want them to go back to the darker style of the originals. I'm glad they're getting new games, but the atmosphere just isn't there anymore.

It came out after ps4 rlease I beleive at least in english. So it's a easy game to port over for a system lacking games.

Fighting the other princesses can be a pain in the ass in this game.
I never realized how crazy the combos could get in this game. I usually just killed people as quickly as possible.

yeah, if you don't go for S rank and objectives, hardly anything matter
in Nightmare Princess I was pretty much always doing 15 hits combos (the max after which ARK stops accumulating, and all 15 need to be different traps to count)

Where's the depth mechanics that the original has?
-Summons that can be leveled up
-Building your own rooms, chokepoints, and escape routes
-Items to heal, Do summons, Manipulate enemy movement, etc
At least newer games has trap combos, since in the original game, traps are not allowed to be placed too close, especially the more powerful traps..

Why are these games "niche" now when they weren't a couple generations ago? Personally I think labeling them as niche is a self-fulfilling prophecy, my fucking Dad used to play the first Deception

I think the issue is the amount of normals in gaming has expanded and the amount of games targeted towards them and gaming websites targeted towards them have increased or at least gotten quite a bit bigger. There's less incentive to cater to the small audiences for games that still follow the "old ways" and cater to the kind of people who played games years ago. Years ago, Deception had no trouble getting a cover story in a gaming mag with Deception II. Now it's lucky it gets a review on Gamespot and maybe 2 preview articles if that. Meanwhile back around the time Deception IV was coming out, J. Normal Mcgee was opening the website every day to see a new article about how great GTA5 will be, etc
