It wasn't really a shitty book. The Old Republic: Revan started two years after the first KOTOR and explained what happened to Revan and Co. afterward. He keeps having nightmares about a world covered in storms and thinks if he finds Mandalore's Mask they'll go away. He and Canderous go to a snow planet, find the mask after a fashion and Canderous becomes Mandalore. Revan regains part of his memory and goes to a planet called Nathema that is completely devoid of the Force. He gets kidnapped by two Sith and taken back to Drommund Kaas, the capital of the Sith Empire. The Ebon Hawk and T3-M4 are left on Nathema. T3-M4 repairs the Ebon Hawk and flies it away, then sometime after that KOTOR II happens. After KOTOR II the Exile, now named Meetra Surik talks to Bastila, who gives her Revan's mask, hoping it will restore his memories fully when the Exile finds him. The Exile eventually finds Drommund Kaas and Revan, and with the help of Lord Scoruge, one of the Sith who kidnapped Revan, they break Revan out of his cell and they attempt to challenge the immortal Sith Emperor. T3-M4 gets destroyed, Lord Scourge has a force vision of another Jedi defeating the Emperor and he kills the Exile to make the Emperor think he was helping him all along, and Revan gets toasted by Force Lightning from the Emperor and hooked up to machines with Sith Sorcery pumping the Emperor's power into him to keep him alive, while the Exile's spirit refuses to become one with the Force so that she can lend her energy to Revan to help him keep his mind while he's going through this. Lord Scourge is made immortal by the Emperor as a reward.

If you want the story reasons it's because the Emperor wanted to study his mind and find out how well prepared the Republic was if he decided to invade it with the Sith Empire. The Exile's spirit helped him resist the Emperor for 300 years.
I'm pretty sure once the Exile regained her connection to the Force she was able to merge with it upon death again, wound or not. Maybe by dying the wound was fixed, I don't know.
If you want the real reasons it's because Bioware wanted a way to have players encounter Revan in TOR and toss in another familiar face at the same time.

I think it makes sense that the exile is female, but the book just absolutely raped the characters, that's why you should keep canon as ambigious as possible when dealing with multiple choice characters, you are bound to piss off someone. I think a sequel to Kotor 2 have great potential, it's just that they dropped the ball trying to intergrate revan into the MMo somehow. Anyone know what level you need to be in 2 to savescum up a Sylvar's robe with TSLRCM installed? I ask because other formerly high level robes are available much earlier, like Aleema Keto's robe and Arca Jeth's robe being in the Telos merchant's inventory at about level 6. Oh no, they aren't decisions taken on this book, but rather on an encyclopedia. It's something I like about the EU, the fact that many people can tell different stories, but sometimes some people don't do proper research and have completely nonsensical and contradictory things happen with no regard to source material. I wasn't trying to accuse the authors of this particular book of making those mistakes, "they" refered to bad authors writing for the EU in general, although I can see how I worded it poorly.
In fact, I like the isolated fact that the Exile should be female. I played female by default on that game and it resonates with my experience. It just pisses me off that both this and those other things were written because they are incompatible.
