It's just not very good, to be honest. Fills the same niche as Touhou or roguelikes - if you spend hundreds of hours, you could develop the skills to make a decent Vine clip or YouTube video.
And that's about it.
I play it if I'm too lazy to break out my IIDX or SDVX controllers. It's simply a fun lightweight rhythm game.

Booted it up a week ago, haven't played 7k since O2Jam/Mania like 10 years ago or something, and 4k for 6 so since Stepmania, both of which when I was young and bad.
Just hit 50k, struggling on 2.5star 7k so I went back and grinded out some 2.5star 4k for some free pp, shit feels bad but gotta do what you gotta do I guess.
Games fun but improving is tough, my 7k has barely gone from 2star (A/B's) to 2.5star (for B/C's) in a week.

I think osu! is kind of fun, but the song selection is pretty shabby. I mean, I'm a weeb and all, but the song selection is waaaay too weeb. There's a few fun songs from VNs I was able to play like Gentle Jena from Planetarian, but everything else varied in terms of enjoyment. I tend to think anime OPs and EDs are not the greatest.

I've cycled through as many non weab songs that I can but you're going to have to have a fair few, or even some shitty converts if you're desperate. O2Jam had a lot of weab as well but I was less self conscious playing those through my speakers, and had a lot of fun gimmicks with the speed up/slow down.
Is Osu!Mania the best Mania like game at the moment? O2Mania feels like shit now, IIDX control scheme is a little different and I'm not well versed in those communities either. I also just spent hours tweaking my skin's to feel perfect as well but the map list is a huge downer for me.

Not him, but, this goes for pretty much every music game out there. Perfecting a song takes lots of concentration, memorization, and just plain being in the right mood in the right place at the right time. It's tedious as fuck, and some people love that.
Besides, there's not really any set goal when playing a music game. Some people like to perfect their favorite songs. Some people like to compete for high scores. Some people like to challenge themselves and try to beat the hardest songs they have a chance at.

The only reason the song list is so shit is because people can't be bothered to clean it up by making good maps of their own.
That's the one big problem with osu, that making good maps usually takes a LOT more time and effort than other games, especially if you want a storyboard to go with it.

Yeah I do them, it's mostly just overuse. I fucked my hands doing 8 hours a day of Melee for weeks to the point where I couldn't click a mouse without pain and had sharp pains up my forearm. Since then I've been careful and rest them in braces and such somewhat often if any soft pains come in (even aches from holding things for long periods), but it's just the fact that everything I do revolves around hand/wrist usage and I do them for long periods as well as I'm not interested in much else.

Why the fuck do I get 0pp from A'ing 2.2star 7k songs and like 10pp for A/Sing a 2.2star 4k star. 7k is substantially harder and yet seems to be extremely top heavy compared to 4k.
I want to get better but it's annoying watching my rank go nowhere when I'm clearly beating songs I couldn't before, and I could go back and farm 4k songs and boost myself way higher.

Watching yourself climb ranks BECAUSE you're getting better is a spectacular motivational tool and allows you to get an accurate representation of your skill over time, but right now the Osu!Mania pp system seems skewed as fuck. Getting 0pp for A'ing a 7k song, yet around 8pp for A'ing a song of the same difficulty in 4k is retarded as 4k is muuuuuch easier.

It is only substantially harder because you have spent substantially less time practicing it.
The pp system in osu is complete garbage as we all know, in mania pp is calculated mostly by the density of the notes, and not by the patterns or other variables. This means that an easy 4k song is usually denser and awards more score than an easy 7k song.
On the other hand, a hard 7k song produces tons more pp than a hard 4k song. 4k players usually wont get much further than 4-5k pp before progress crawls to a halt, while everyone sitting on 6k pp and up play 7k.
Blame peppy, he doesn't give a songle shit about fixing this gamemode, you're better off learning LR2 while you are still fresh and haven't grown accustomed to the awkward hit-timing in osu.

What, with the few amount of maps that are actually ranked for 4k (and mania in general), you hit a peak in rank. The highest rank player who only plays 4k charts is like ~#600
7k players have more higher level charts to get pp from (maniera etc)

Just as an example, I played 4k till I was rank #1200 with about 4,400pp, at that point I started playing 7k, and it took me about 6 months of practice just to start gaining some pp again, but once you get into the 5 star+ songs in 7k you'll be swimming in pp compared to 5 star 4k songs (not to mention that because of there being fewer lanes in 4k, it'll just get exponentially denser as star rating increases, good luck EVER being able to go above 5 star in 4k, there's just jackhammers denser than black holes everywhere you look.

Thanks anon, I'll definitely give it a shot. I also feel the distaste for long notes but I figure I'll need to learn to multitask efficiently enough anyway. Sucks that this has left a slight distaste in my mouth for mania though.. I'll consider LR2 as a practice tool and song variety anyway.
Also Koreans are good at long notes due to O2Jam right? Is O2Jam even possible to play in english/as a foreigner these days? Last time I played was before they removed the international server and I think made it IP locked.
