Why don't you buy a pre-built PC, Anon? Don't you want to be normal?

If I wanted to be normal don't you think I'd leave my house sometimes?

HTC already has their own manufacturing setup, on top of the fact it's not all custom made shit.

This will be the major difference. The Rift is full of custom made shit, jacking the price.

The only thing the Vive will have made specifically for it is the lenses and screen.
>>
>>323132242
Nothing that could legit be considered a GOTY was 2D this year anon.
>>
>>323134182
Well, I don't know about that.

But the Lighthouse sensors are what do the bulk of the tracking in the Vive setup.
The little attachments on the headset and controllers are basically just emitters for it to track.

They'll just be standard controllers with lightbulbs attached in a way so that at least one emitter should always be visible to the sensor, and shaped like dildos of course.

These bundles likely won't go 50% off.
But unlike with consoles, this happens with PCs multiple times a year.

So my advice. Be patient and scour after deals for a period of time of around at least 8~ or so months give or take.
When you find a really good(s) deal of around 40-60% off. Be it on individual components or pre-built computers(that you can fix where needed with separate components that you also get when on sale).

And you spend approximately $500 give or take. The final price is obviously heavily reliant on what sales you managed to catch over the course of the year. But the above should have a good chance of landing you with hardware that will enable you to play games at the highest settings, but more importantly last for approximately two console generations while still having potential modification uses even after having ultimately become dated.

I guess this rant really doesn't have much to do with VR. But if there is one thing I have learned from /v/ it's that /v/ really has no idea of how to properly buy a computer. Now I love consoles myself and have mosty of them in addition to my PCs. But seriously, learn how to acquire PCs and PC hardware. The market doesn't behave like the console market. So learn.

This is such a bad idea, no respectable company allows people to do this, why do video games developers get away with this?

Seriously it's like the first fucking rule don't discuss the business on social media because you will inevitably get one employee who is racist or starts a fight with a customer or whatever who gives you a PR problem

Yet no vidya companies seem to have this rule, why?

Porn.

Whatever VR tech uses the most porn, or gets the most porn, or is exclusive to porn, will win. It happened to BluRay and it'll happen to VR.

So, anybody buying now for anything other than to say "I have one" is retarded. It's like buying a HD DVD player and then going "b-b-but where are all the DVD's? :((("

It's useful for NAS servers. You may also get a speed boost.

I don't know if doing it with SSDs would be healthy for the drives, though. A lot of I/O happens there.

Palmer Luckey is young and stupid when it comes to business and PR and the price of the Rift has really highlighted his inexperience.

First of all he shot himself in the foot many months ago as soon as he started giving ballpark figures for the cost of the Rift. Ballpark of $350, great! $400, maybe $500 at an absolute max. But $600? Fuck off, that's approaching double your ballpark figure.

Luckey's post on his AMA tried to explain this fuck up. He had some dumb bullshit about how he was contrasting $350 with $1500 because the $1500 number was stuck in his mind because apparently media outlets were running stories saying the Rift costs $1500. I don't remember any site doing this, from what I recall most sites were fine in reporting that Luckey had stated that a $1500 PC is recommended for Rift users. Seems like total bullshit to me and I don't know why people are falling for his lies.

Just remember this guy had a neat idea, had his project explode into something he would have never expected where he's gotten his hand on some serious cash. He's just excited as fuck with the sense of importance he has now. Let him dig his own grave. A lot of us knew that as soon as Facebook got involved this thing was a lost cause.

This thing is fucking years off from having any chance of making it big. $600 is already a lot to ask for, but on top of that users need $1500 PCs? Does Palmer Luckey realize how shit the average PC is?

It's kinda strange, somehow that extra $100 really pushed me over the edge to not buy it. I would've been fine at $500, really, and relative to everyone else my shipping and taxes only bring it up to ~$680. But it's kinda weird, for years I was prepared to pay $350 or so plus the price of a new GPU (putting off the upgrade because I wanted to buy something at the last moment, so I could get my money's worth) and then I read all those interviews where he said the ballpark was off and I was actually willing to get it for $500 without much hesitation.

Something about that last $100 and the way he's acting on Twitter really puts me off, though. I try to rationalize it with "it's just $100 more, a fraction of what you were gonna spend anyway", but that shit isn't flying. I got my preorder in, and I know I'm not gonna not buy an HMD, but I'm probably gonna cancel the Rift, and only have it preordered on the off chance that the Vive starts catching fire on people's heads or some crazy shit.
>>
>>323130301
who is this semen demon?
>>
>>323149689
Man just wait for a couple months after release date. They'll release a version without all that extra shit bundled in and you can probably get it for that 500 dollary doos. Alternatively wait and see how the competition handles their tech and jump ship if necessary.
>>
>>323149689
The price WILL come down. Just consider if a 100 dollar cut is worth waiting until 2017 for you.
>>
>>323144038
Wow, most shops that sell parts also can build your PC for free if you buy the parts there.

People sure are stupid if they pay you.
>>
>>323150124
My preorder ships in May (I think?) which was somewhat intentional, because it'll let me see what happens with people who get theirs earlier and with all the Vive stuff. I was actually able to preorder as soon as they went up, I just decided not to. I'm like 99% sure that I'm gonna cancel, though, because even if the Vive is a couple hundred more, it would be worth it for the included controllers, plus the AR stuff is kinda neat.

I was actually planning to sell the controller to recoup some of the cost (and because I already have a wired 360 pad, and Windows 7), and I really don't mind the headphones, but I realize I'm in a minority on that front.

In the end, buying one wouldn't be the end of the world for me, not because I'm super affluent, but just because I'd be willing to take a little loss on reselling if I wasn't satisfied.

>>
>>323150470
It is not, it is absolutely not. Not because I'm impatient but just because I've already been holding back this long. Every time a DK came out I seriously considered purchasing one, and the only thing that kept me from doing so was the thought that "the CV will be a lot better, and for a similar price, you would be wasting your money you dumbass". Even without a huge selection of software I would've had a lot of fun just fucking around with it and making stuff (not for actual deving, more like a new hardware toy). I somewhat regret not buying a DK, to be honest, because I imagine I would've had a lot of fun.

But yeah, at this point I consider any extra I have to pay a premium for getting it early, and honestly I'm fine with it, I just don't want to end up with an expensive brick relative to the competition, so I guess I'll wait.

No normalfag ("normie" reeks of reddit) I know uses a mac. They all have a consumer grade laptop riddled with OEM bloatware, viruses and adware.
>>
>>323152409
Ehhhh, I dunno about that, there are a good chunk of them that save up to get Macs because of the "luxury" appeal and whatever, I'd say the primary barrier of entry for them is just the price, which is ironically the only reason they would want one.

I mean, I'm sure if you asked a normalfag whether they'd prefer a Windows laptop or a Macbook, they'd probably go for the latter. People who choose Windows usually have pretty specific reasons, the primary one being "I want to play games", I imagine.

So, yeah, you're right that they usually have shitty laptops or netbooks or whatever the fuck they're calling them, but I'm sure most would go for a Mac if they could.
>>
Why is it so god damn much? Not only Oculus, but from the looks of it, it seems other VR sets will be in that range.

Idea seemed cool to me, I've never tried it. I was hoping to try one at a kiosk somewhere when they were out and if i liked it, I would buy one. I legitimately estimated they'd be around $200

I don't think a price drop will be a thing either. If it actually gets popular, it'll probably be similar to damn phones, constantly releasing newer versions, so what you have is outdated shit, and every time a new game comes out, your GPU won't be able to handle both, but the new version would certainly be optimized.

>>323152828
In the case of the CV1, it's the custom parts. Some anons argue that the headphones and Xbone controller add something significant to the price, but I actually believe Palmer on them being inconsequential.

Ultimately, the devkits were cheaper because they were made from off the shelf components (the DK2 literally has the screen from a Note 3 in it, digitizer and all). I think Oculus got a little carried away with trying to provide "the best experience", because their future relies entirely on VR being seen as something other than a gimmick. Damned if they do damned if they don't, kinda. The price is still too damn high, though.

By all estimates PSVR could be expensive because they have to include the extra hardware for timewarping, and nobody really knows where the Vive is gonna land, but they really have a good chance to pull the rug out from under Oculus if their price is right.

Ran out of room for the last point, but phones from 2 years ago are really affordable.

This is the part I don't understand. Don't you have pretty much all the components to make a VR headset in a modern smartphone? The screen, the sensors etc...

His age shouldn't give him a pass. I am younger than him and I immediately saw, without any external feedback, that his Twitter responses were a potential problem, and I guarantee you that there are plenty of people his age or younger on here that feel the same way. In the past he has been good with interviews and whatnot, but it seems like that was only because there wasn't that much criticism/pressure at the time. The backlash put him in a defensive posture and the best thing to do in that situation is shut up and think.

>>323155371
Oculus really wanted to pull out all the stops for this, which meant no compromises. They could've gone with already existing smartphone screens (like they did with the DKs), but decided that they wanted the CV to be better, so everything is custom. Whether it is worth it or not is to be seen, since the Vive is going to be using less custom components, which will give us a good comparison.

That is if Palmer is to be believed, of course.
