The time limit was arbitrary as in it didn't fuckin' matter. It would take a serious fucking retard to actually run out of time in those games, so all they actually do is impose a restriction on one's sense of free roam and scare them into thinking they have to focus on the main quest, when in actuality, they have been duped and actually have all the time in the world. There's no real purpose to the time limit other than to trick the player into thinking they're being locked on rails to finish the main quest before the game ends itself; pretty fucking underhanded.
FONV boasts complete freedom better than any other Fallout game in the series by far. Given that people dickride the series for being about freedom, you'd think FONV would get more credit for that.
