Which games have the "ruined world" look and which of those do it right?
I've heard Dark Souls is pretty good for this category, can anyone corroborate that?

Yeah dark souls fits the bill pretty spot on. Demon Souls as well. I feel like the atmosphere of a ruined world is better in demon souls because the events of that game take place closer to the catastrophe that caused said ruination. Dark souls is still great however, its events just take place much longer after "the end of the world" so to speak.

Transitor has you playing during what essentially amounts to an extinction event, if you're looking for a new take on a "ruined world".The world in Transitor was designed to be constantly changed/shifted around, so as it gets "ruined" it becomes more and more ordered and rigid.
Game is good for a playthrough or two. Fun combat system and it's pretty to look at. Pirate it, spend 10 hours or so.

I cannot think of any other game that does this better than the Souls/BB series recently.
In Demon's Souls the proud kingdom of Boletaria found the way to control the power of the Soul itself, but they abused and ripped the Veil and Old One came out, spreading the Fog through the kingdom and consuming the world. Stories speak of what lies at the other side of the Fog, which tells of travelers that never return.
Dark Souls is implied to be on the same universe but not quite.
