What does /v/ think of Monster hunter X?
I only got to 4 stars, but so far I am pretty disappointed with the lack of new content, the freedom unite maps are cool and all, but I'd much rather have new maps. I feel like an idiot for jumping over MH4 for this, but then again, I only started the game.
So, am I really an idiot for skipping MH4 which is a superior game? Or have I not played enough of X?
It's an anniversary game, so it doesn't have as much content as a new numbered installment or a G version. if you want content, go for 4U
You haven't played enough of X to understand and appreciate just how far its come since 4 and 4U.
I'm playing 4U now, and I'm coming to really appreciate the complexity of the Charge Blade and it's 3 different styles you can play it. Compared to the Switch Axe, which was the most complex transforming weapon in Tri, it's clear lessons were learned and improved upon.

It has more content than 4, but not 4U, although the gap of monsters between X and 4U is very small, the big difference is the G rank armor sets.

I'm rather enjoying the game myself, my main gripe is, although I'm low star, things dying too fast. I'm wrecking these monsters and I feel bad for them. I hope they get way harder once I get to high star.

MH had "cool flashy moves" since MH2, what with GS charge, LS Spirit Combo, and the entirety of Switch Axe, Insect Glaive and Charge Blade. 90% of the hunting arts are usually just longer or better versions of moves the weapon already has, like hammer's Typhoon is just the spin. 90% of them are useless, slow and lock you in place, thus making your complaint about "weighted movesets" completely out of place considering you have to more careful than usually if you want to use them.
Monster design is probably you having shit taste.
I don't want to fuck around with my 3DS or get a jap one, but I really want to try X.

The monster designs didn't start getting better until MH2. Before that, it was wyverns upon wyverns upon wyverns.

Same skeleton all around but unique and simplistic designs.
Gen 2 had solid designs, got a bit silly with conga and rajang but a nice step-up.
Gen 3 had top tier monster designs with the exception of 3U, sadly they were mostly boring fights.
4 is more or less like 2 with great designs, got a bit crazy with Magala but it's a dragon so that's expected.
X just feels like some other studio made the new monsters like the team handling the MMO. They look extremely out of place by MH standards and fight like cartoons.

Really? Gamuto feels like a G2 monster right away you can tell he was made for the Snowy Mountain regions as if him and 6-8 they were made to be together. He's so fucking big he just throws his weight around as attacks, hardly seems cartoony at all to me.
Dinovaldo is super standard and fights the most like a combination of existing monsters. MH wiki lists one of his notes as

Seems more like a mashup of different monsters to me.
Tamamitsune is probably who you're talking about the most but really it fits right in with existing Leviathans desu, it seems flashy and over-the-top but next to monsters like Agnkator and Lagiacrus not really.
