They make good engines and use them to create mediocre first person shooters.

I do like the first Far Cry, and Crysis can be fun to dick around with, but Crytek's game are largely boring tech demos disguised as games.

They make a game engine that is completely GOAT, blows everything else out of the water when used right then """""upgrades"""" it into a shitty UE3 "magic port button" engine and now it's trash.

The biggest thing they did wrong was not put up any proper documentation so anyone who uses that isn't them has no idea how the fuck to use it.

Tried to make up for downgrading in Cry Engine 3 by artificially lowering performance.
Went through absolute, 100% decline in all aspects.
Tried to chase every fad they could(ever since Crysis 2), always came late to the party or failed.

Ryse taking so much time to develop didn't help either, it was supposed to be Kinect title, then it turned into normal game and then into Xbone launch game... you know how it ended.

I played Ryse for a little over two hours before refunding it. So glad they still accepted the refund.

I wanted to love it so much. I love Crytek, they make absolutely gorgeous games. And Ryse didn't disappoint in the least on that front. But the gameplay. The shitty, overcasualized, braindead, shallow, monotonous, "no need to even tilt the analog stick, you automatically target enemies" Arkham-style combat. The absolute shittiest style of combat ever made.

Arkham Asylum was pretty good, especially due to the Metroidvania-style level design and Mark Hamil's amazing performance, but I almost wish it had never released at all. That way we wouldn't have so many horribly underwhelming Arkham-combat clones.
>>
>>323068820
Sure, and the CryEngine is very unoptimized. But it's still solid if you want to make a pretty AAA action setpiece game.

The combat in Arkham is easily the worst thing to ever happen. At first it seemed cool then it sinks in that its just casual shit and a lot of games love to copy it.
>>
>>323067853
>it had a fucking massively tessellated ocean rendered below the fuckign map.
this was so that AMD cards would struggle to render everything while NVidia barely made it to 60fps. they sabotaged the market.
same thing with crysis 3, if you were playing with an AMD, a tessellated plane would load under the game world to make your performance fall.

It's fine in Arkham Asylum. As a series gimmick it worked because combat was never meant to be the primary focus of Arkham Asylum.

The problem with it is that it's showing up in every fucking video game ever now, even heavily combat focused ones like Shadow of Mordor. And normalfags think it's skill based action combat.
>>
>>323069435
Exactly, I'm glad someone agrees. Too many people say "oh, you think Arkham combat is bad? You're not playing it on hard difficulty then!" Hard difficulty doesn't magically increase gameplay depth. The combat is exactly as shallow, enemies just deal more damage and attack more frequently. Batman still automatically targets enemies, Batman still has minimal need for positioning due to being able to counter with the press of a button, Batman still has a shallow moveset if you can even consider mashing A to be a moveset at all. Arkham combat is the most condescening gameplay I've ever seen in a game - it implies the player is an absolute retard who can only mash a button.
>>
>>323069034
It isn't. Does every game need to be a Tim Burton ripoff for you to consider it original?
>>
>>323069435
Yeah, it spread like cancer. Like the CoD of third person games. What a shit industry.
>>
>>323070030
So isn't Crysis 2
>>
>>323064662
Everything went wrong.

EA made them an offer they couldn't refuse, they dumbed down Crysis 2 and 3 for casuals and their shitboxes.

They tried to expand too quickly. They opened several studios and took over Black Sea and Free Radical.

They tried changing their business model to free to play, this was a bad move. Warface was not very successful. They've got some other free to play games in closed beta.

They got suckered into making a Kinect game for Microsoft: Ryse. It sucked so much that they removed all the Kinect controls and had to wait until the Xbox One came along before they could get it running properly. It sold badly.

They lost probably their only chance at success by selling away Free Radical and Homefront 2.

Now they're going all-in on VR and while I hope they will be successful, I don't think they will.
>>
>>323070424
Poor bunch of retards.
Trying to get in on VR is probably their best decision since Crysis 1 though.

Unreal 4 can be fucking great but its currently not used at all. It's free which is good but they take royalties from games developed and sold with it.

Only game I have played that used it recently was Ark and thats just a shitty EA survival game that is terribly optimized, completely unplayable.
>>
>>323071151
The game was a generation ahead when the generation had just begun, and people could run it. It was not unoptimized.
>>
>>323071125

Only Unreal 4 game I've played is the Unreal Tournament Alpha.

The fully designed levels look great, but it's also UT so it's pretty light on the grafix because you want speed, not pretty in an arena shooter.

>>
>>323072521
The only difference is Screed combat has all the enemies circle around you and attack one at a time, while you insta kill with a counter attack. Bam Ham combat has them all in a big group while you hop over them constantly and counter attacks over and over, and need to finish them off to kill them quickly.

They're similar because Bam Ham combat is based off of Screed, but Bam Ham combat is being very clearly being cloned because mouth breathing casuuls think it's skill based. I think everyone is bored of Screed combat now.
>>
>>323072258
I don't even blame them. If I could make billions of dollars by getting 1% Chinks to spend absurd amount of money on a cheaply made online shooter, I'd do it.

The funny thing is, Crossfire has some pretty clever game modes that I haven't seen in other games or at least not many. I played it years and years ago

Anyone who says CryEngine has been downgraded since CE2 is a retard. If you go on their forums and look at their user art gallery, you're going to see some of the most gorgeous real-time, optimised-for-gameplay enderings you've ever seen. There are even scenes from Crysis re-rendered in the modern iteration of the engine, and they look 5x better. It's the games themselves (Crysis 2) that aren't graphicslly stunning. The engine is fine.

Incidentally, Crysis is one of my favourite games of all time. Not because of the graphics (though they are good even to this day, eight years later), but because the gameplay allows you to approach a situation from pretty much any angle all the while presenting a good challenge. It's also epic as fuck... that final battle. How can you complain when it involves flying through tornadoes and fighting 50-foot aliens on an aircraft carrier with a gun that shoots miniature nukes?

I'm fine with console-ish FOV most of the time, but it was nearly unbearable in Crysis'es. It's a shame because I really wanted to like it, the gameplay itself felt solid as fuck and it was overall really reminiscent of Halo and Halo 2 which I really like.
