It all really started going downhill with the advent of G4. A cable tv channel about "Gamers", playing video games stopped being niche and opinionated people felt obligated to bring their opinions into our hobby.
We never used to concern ourselves with the title of "gamer". We just played games and hopefully met other people who did, too. Now with how big the scene is all these previously teased and picked on folks are seeing new people who casually play stuff getting popular for something they used to get made fun of for. Now everyone is defensive, trying to define what is and is not game.
If you can't enjoy games on your own terms and make your own decisions, maybe you were never really that much into the hobby at all, and it's time to realize it was a phase for you, or maybe you need to get back to being that quiet kid with like three friends who swore to god you could get Goku in smash and didn't care if people thought your obsession with unlocking Shen Long and backpack full of game insert books was weird.

Yes it has. All the old Japanese companies are pretty much failing and jumping ship. Nintendo hardly creates anything at all but keeps putting out hardware.
