I also give him credit for open sourcing the Quake engine which eventually became the backbone of most 3D game engines nowadays.
But, people chose the Quake engine not because it was great but because it was open. Plus plenty of people made 3D games without even touching the Quake engine or it's derivatives.
But what really bothers me is that he's revered as a god when there are plenty of devs innovating independently and go completely unnoticed. He hasn't really done anything extraordinary in the past 10~15 years but is still the hero of 3D programming. Honestly, fuck him.
