$600 is the price of innovation and based Palmer Luckey understands that.

you'll pretty much need a new GPU from either amd or nvidia from this year being pascal / polaris.

but nvidia themselves say you should wait for volta (2018) for the VR memes.
>>
>>323022148
and even than oculus will be expensive
i can understand this is brand new, but it's just a cellphone screen
800/1000€ is too much for something that will be outdated in 1 year

plus this is Facebook, they will probably lock down this device to their propetary service

Vive is mandatory at this point, let's see if that is really as good as everybody says
>>
>>323022487

HTC has to be dense as a brick if they don't pick up on this.
>>
>>323019923
The original iphone was never 600, let alone 600+contract.

And even then, the Iphone actually had tech in it, whereas the rift is just a phone screen, a sensor, and some cables.

All the actual work is done by the PC.

You're literally paying 600 for a mid range phone screen in an enclosure.

Btw, the iphone is also a scam. The cost of producing one is about 150 dollars
>>
>>323023269
vive will be 1000€ or more but at least if will be steam compatible and probably you will be able to use with non steam products

Kikebook is not worth it
>>
>>323023702
>Btw, the iphone is also a scam. The cost of producing one is about 150 dollars

That was their point. Apple reinvented themselves as a luxury brand, with the price tag to boot and the hipsters all flocked to them.

Nobody would be pissed off at 599.99 US Dollars if it wasn't for the fact Lucky came out 3 months before and said the price 'would be ballpark around $350'
$600 is not ballpark 350
>>
>>323024702
even better when only the screen costs 800€ with no pc attached to it
>>
>>323024303
And that worked for apple, but it wont work for the rift. It never will. A phone is a necessity in todays age. A gimmicky addon for games isnt.

Apple appealed to the masses as "a luxury product".

That doesnt work for the VR, it is forever stuck with the image of being a niche product for shutins.
>>
>>323023702
it's not just phone screen, it's shitload of sensors, software, enclosure.

Just like how it doesn't cost 1.8 million to make a javelin missile, you can make one from scrap with hired help from khyber pass, but it will never perform or fly like a javelin.
The difference is about 1.3million spent on making sure it goes bang in the right place every time no matter how stupid the operator or how hard it's been banged up.
Same for oculus: 200 to build it and 400 to back it up since it'll be niche when it comes out. Which is fine. Decent joysticks start at around 300 as well.
If it gets popular and technology matures it'll become cheaper. If they add some extra bits to make it useful for gamedev, it'll get another niche field.
>>
>>323019923
No you fucking idiot the base phone was 600 dollars with no contract, with a contract you would only be paying about 90 to 100 bucks
>>
>>323020804

thats incredibly generous.
It definetly doesnt cost more than 150
>>
>>323024894
>it's shitload of sensors, software, enclosure.
most of which do nothing without a proper game with a proper code

can't you see the bullshit

it's just a 150/200€ screen that wants you to believe it's the only vr technology you need.

in reality you need a pc, a platform and games

in this sense Steam is a better choice
but even then 800€ is too fucking much
>>
>>323024859
A phone is necessary. A 600 dollar flagship isn't.

It's a luxury. A dumbphone will serve you fine.
I am a normalfag and I rarely use my smartphone for anything other than calling and texting. Not even games or camera or internet gets that much use. I just spent 500 on it because I liked the look and feel and I had the money.

600 dollars for trackir+good monitors is honestly not expensive. It costs about as much as a one time computer upgrade.Unless you're a NEET in which case fuck you, you useless piece of shit.
>>
>>323024894

>>323025081
Yeah.
Your 500$ monitor won't do shit without something to drive it.
Your 50,000$ car still doesn't do shopping or groceries for you.
Your 500,000$ house is shit without electricity, heating. internet
Oculus is just a set of monitors that have trackIR in them and they're high fidelity and more reliable.
There's allready shitload of games that massively benefit from it, especially shit like flightsims/arma.

A lot of games are being developed for it right now, especially indies since oculus and other new tech is great if you want exposure. I know 3 devteams that are making oculus games and I'll start my own soon.
So yeah, if you don't want it, how about you not buy it shitlord. You're supposed to live your own life.
I'll be getting one since I want to operate operationally.
>>
>>323021169
where's the other $25 go?
>>
don't pay it. there's a good chance these things will end up on ebay for around $400 or less, a month after release.

people will buy into the hype, realize they don't really like it, then end up selling it because they spent $600 on something they're not that interested in.
>>
If you unironically have an iphone and you're in this thread right now, get the fuck out.

They should have made VR niche in its purpose. For something like therapy. Then refashion it for mainstream audience later.

VR is going to fail big time at this price point. And many people who do buy it are going to find their PCs aren't capable of using it, leading to many complaints.

At this point, I honestly think the Sony VR is the most viable. Even if its subpar, it'll be cheap and guaranteed to run on the hardware.

3DS didn't do 3d first though, not by a long shot, and it's not even the same screen technology. the rift uses a normal screen (or is it two now?) separated with a divider, no fancy 3DS shit that barely works.

But whatever, it's all irrelevant if you haven't tried it, because you don't know what it is all about, you think you do but you really don't, you don't have a clue.

>but that is exactly what it is.

What I mean with it's not forced by corporations is that it's something that people actually wants, hence why people backed the kickstarter. Compared to 3DTV when companies just say "THIS IS THE NEXT BIG THING". It's not the same case with VR.

To be honest, the first iPhone kinda did change the market forever by being the first smartphone with super-easy to use and comfortable touchscreen UI, that practically everyone started copying at instant. And a bit later Appstore was another big thing too.

Of course there were tons of touchscreen phones even before it, but none were even remotely as usable as it. They certainly had more features than it, and the first iPhone was actually almost comically devoid of many features and options that other phones had, it just was a major step forward in usability. Also, that doesn't really excuse the fact that they haven't done any meaningful big updates since iPhone 4, but that's a matter for another discussion.

3ds uses a parallax barrier to shift the viewpoint for each of your eyes, extremely gimmicky and very limited, the rift does no such thing, if you're referring to the stereoscopic rendering then that's just basic 3d just like nvidia has done for 15+ years now.

>Oculus has stated previously that their target price for a consumer virtual reality headset would be around $300. With the Oculus Rift DK2 going on sale last week for $350, it can be assumed that Luckey’s comment applies to the forthcoming consumer version of the Oculus Rift. If the company could bring the cost down to $100 per headset, it would surely go a long way toward widespread adoption of VR.
