Is offline Ultimate mode worth playing? Does it get better after a few urgents?
Expert had a whole new batch of Oni and a new story but so far Ultimate looks like a gaggle of recolors with higher HP. I'm rapidly losing steam and thinking of dropping it.

As far as I remember there weren't any new Onis in Ultimate. It only gave you a bunch of old ones and maybe some recolors like from the last story related boss. DLC missions had like 1-2.

I booted up the game just to make sure. Those are the last few Oni in the game. I think everything after Aurogrinder is in the DLC missions.

It's not because it's too hard or anything. Fights aren't even that long, nothing's reached 10 minutes ever since I figured out how things work. It's just not engaging enough to fight the same exact monsters for a whole new third of the game. I approach all the Oni the same way and run into no difficulty.
Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed the game, just not enough to do it all over again so soon.

Not really. It has a seperate Singleplayer / multiplayer campaign but you'll have to clear the regular Toukiden story for the first 9 chapters or so which wasn't that great. It gets better later but that's probably like 20-30 hours of gameplay before you even reach that part. And many missions force you to fight the same onis for the 20th time.

It's okay. Second half of the story was much better but the first half could have been better. Try it if you already like hunting games. Avoid like the plague if you don't already enjoy the concept of fighting one boss multiple times for equipment crafting.

It's basically a mix of musou combat and hunting style grinding / enemies. It's really mash heavy on some weapons while others are slow. Generally it feels like there isn't much impact on your hits. Licensing issues or something like that. Not that it's great anyways, it mostly records stuff at 720p/30fps instead of original resolution and framerate, they just fucked up Toukiden even more. I've never heard of any other game doing this though.

I know there are status ailments. There are plenty of times aside from those where it stands there breathing in a neutral position after an action and it drives me bonkers how long it takes.

Adding to this, maybe my biggest issue with the game is how long the Oni spend not threatening the player. Too much time passes in between possible damage. They just sit there for several seconds at a time, roar uselessly, get stunned, take several seconds to flinch, get their legs continuously chopped off, have too many attacks that don't threaten anyone but their immediate target, and spend way too long telegraphing obvious attacks even late into the game. When playing as Bow I could stand right next to most of them and have no fear.
