You can really use whatever characters you want. The customization in this game means that every character is a blank slate. The only differences are limit breaks and ultimate weapons.
That said, Cloud, Yuffie, and Cid is the best party in the game because of their ultimate weapons, unless you take a retarded long time grinding so you can damage overflow glitch on Barret or Vincent.

You can Morph sources and dupe them with the W Item glitch, even in the PS4 and Steam versions. This means everyone can get to 255 in all stats quickly and easily. You also have to take into account the effects of ultimate weapons. Unless you grind a lot, Yuffie has the best ultimate weapon, followed by Cloud and Cid. Cloud and Cid also have the best growth weapons in the game for leveling up materia.

It's not necessary to dupe the sources. It just speeds it up. You can morph every type of source from the random encounters on the sunken Gelnika. You can also morph power sources from random encounters in Mt. Corel and Mt. Nibel. You can morph guard sources from Spiralers near Mideel.
Yuffie's ultimate weapon, the Conformer, does not suffer from the damage penalty when using morph. This means that farming sources, even without duping them with W Item, is still very quick and easy.

Cid is good because he has some of the best weapons in the game. He has the best weapon for materia growth, and his ultimate weapon is one of the better ultimates. In addition, his limit breaks are very good.
Yuffie is good because back row and Conformer is objectively the best late game weapon if you don't plan on grinding for damage overflow on Vincent or Barret.
Vincent is absolutely horrible unless you spend a ridiculous amount of time grinding for damage overflow with his Death Penalty weapon. His limit breaks are worthless, causing you to lose control of him. That said, he does have some early to mid game usefulness with his Sniper CR weapon. It has perfect accuracy, making him a great candidate for utilizing the Deathblow materia.

There's an extension of the W Item glitch that allows you to dupe items obtained in battle via Morph, Steal, etc.
What you have to do is have just one of a usable item in the first slot that you don't mind getting rid of. I'll use a potion for my example.
1. I have a single Potion in my first slot, and some other usable item in the second slot.
2. Yuffie morphs a Spiraler for a Guard Source.
3. During the Morph attack, I go into the item menu with my W Item user.
4. Press [Confirm] on the potion and choose someone to use it on. The potion slot is now blank.
5. Go to my usable item in the second slot and press [Confirm] but do not select a character to use it on.
6. Morph finishes. The Guard Source appears in the empty slot that was previously occupied by the potion.
7. Alternate pressing [Confirm] and [Cancel] to start duplicating the Guard Source.
This trick can work with items obtained in battle through other methods, too, like items that you get from stealing or getting back an item that an enemy has stolen from you by killing that enemy.
If you want to duplicate morphed items from single enemy encounters, you'll need to get a little more clever with your materia setups. Have Counter + Morph, and then Counter + Full Life x4 as your materia setup, for instance. Yuffie gets hit, she counters with Morph, and kills the enemy. Normally you wouldn't have time to duplicate the item because the battle is going to end, but she's going to also cast Full Life four times, each casting of which has a decently long animation, so you can duplicate during that.

You want something even funnier? Try sticking sixteen mastered KOTR materia on Barret while using the Missing Score weapon.
Missing Score doesn't do more damage with Mastered materia. It does more damage the more AP a materia has earned. KOTR has the highest max AP of any materia in the game at mastered level.
With sixteen mastered KOTR materia slotted, Missing Score's damage will overflow, allowing you to kill Emerald Weapon with a single normal attack.

And considering the fact that thief enemies can steal ANY item in the game from you, it's actually possible to use that to duplicate any item you want, if you can get lucky with getting an enemy to steal the item you want to duplicate. There are people working on the exact mechanics for the RNG to figure out how to make enemies steal the items you want them to steal, so soon it will be possible to dupe any item reliably with W Item.
