I have some good news for you guys. Incase you haven't been following, the Metroid 2 remake is making some good progress. The dev says they've nearly finished on the 5th area, and after that will just be minor boss tweaking, and the concept for the Metroid Queen. My money is on it releasing sometime this year.
The next Metroid game needs to focus on an isolated planet hunting Metroids. Metroid II is still my favorite game of the series.

You can get lost with a map. Especially in the Metroid Prime games where the 3D map didn't hlep in many cases.

Fine and well.
Sadly Nintendo doesn't want to really deal with the mainline Metroid and I feel Retro is kind of done with the Prime games.
I kind of get what they were trying to do with Fusion. Change it up so there's an element of stealth with instead of feeling like a super powered god you are pretty weak even late into the game. Sadly they forced a annoying long monologue with rooms being cut off because of plot which felt so unlike Metroid.
Other M however was just pure bad.
SO, should I play Zero Mission or the original as my first Metroid?

The real problem with NES Metroid is a lot of the game looks the same and there's not really any landmarks to get your bearings straight. Another problem is when you start a save file you start with only 50 health with a pain (save states fixes that problem). If you are fine with that go and enjoy the NES. But personally Zero Mission is the best Metroid game.

I honestly don't know how zero mission is since I've never played it, I hear good things about it though. However, super is typically considered the best metroid, if that helps at all.

Yes and no. Super's gameplay and physics fit the pacing of the game pretty well while ZM's fit the more fast paced handheld gameplay that game has. It did objectively improve some things, like the clunky ass item selection scheme Super had, but the other criticisms people have with it are more of less subjective. If you're against the idea of playing the original Metroid and you don't like playing them out of release order, just start with Super and then play ZM. It's not like there's a lot of story to grasp from the games anyway.
I wonder how hard it would be to convince Samus to pose in her blue sports bra and shorts for me.

I recall preferring the Zero Mission controls. Forgot the specifics but I remember being bothered by how limited the button mapping in Super was (something about not getting a perfectly comfortable aim up/aim down/ run scheme) but ZM's controls are streamlined enough that I didn't have issues.
