I've only blown up the capital ship once on normal, and I can count the times I've attempted to fight it on one hand. I usually get fucked somewhere around sector 4/5 by a ship that perfectly counters what I have

Here's a link of videos to a guy who streamed himself with a 39 win-streak on hard. After he won in a row with all 28 ships he just kept winning on random.
Protip, if you're losing to RNG more than once in a thousand runs, you're not losing to RNG

I like to play my video games, not follow a flowchart to victory.
Favorite thing to do is setting ships on fire and watching the enemy crew die. Slowly. Asphyxiation is also fun.
Seriously recommends Captain's Edition mod if you are bored with the base game.

Looks like those mods affected the scoring there. Probably mainly the one that gives you infinite sectors.
