I find it very hard to go back to old 3D games now because they just look so shit, but isometric games still look good today and it's easier to get into them imo, Baldur's Gate is a good example of this

Something doesn't become bad just because the next best thing comes around.

If a game looks like shit now then it looked like shit back then too.

The only exceptions to this is playing games how they weren't supposed to be played, like retro games on an HD tv.

I can't stand playing old first person tile based dungeon crawlers.

Their primitive graphics and lack of animation makes it impossible to navigate properly. When every single screen looks the same it becomes really easy to lose track of where you are, even with a map.

Grimrock is fine since it has enough graphical fidelity to not make every wall look the same, and you move smoothly between tiles.

Not actually joking about this one. Fallout 3 was already hideous back when it released in 2008. Fallout 4 may not look like much or play very well, but it's still such a huge improvement over Fo3, it has made me seriously dislike even the idea of going back to Fo3. Never, ever touching this again.

>>
>>322937847

Nah, these games were clearly trying to be more complex than a computer at the time could handle, as evident by automapping that was implemented as soon as it was feasible.
>>
>>322937782
I know the feeling. Suddenly every single feature just clashes, and the game leaves you wondering how you ever thought it was good, or interesting, or even just fun. With Skyrim, it happened basically mid-game as I was crafting a daedric set and wondering at how completely anticlimatic and mundane the whole grind up to it had been. All of the game's charm instantly gone and replaced by jank everywhere some ~30 hours in.
>>
>>322938543
Automapping was first implemented in 1986 or 1987, many games didn't endorsed it though(especially if they were going for the "hardcore" crowd which was much more common back then).
>>
>>322931887
i got pretty far in arena a couple years ago it wasn't unplayable

rather just play daggerfall though
>>
>>322938830

Or because of technical reasons.
There's a reason why you don't see a revival of early dungeon crawlers like you do with other dead genres, nobody wants to play them anymore.
>>
>>322938697
On my second playthru of Skyrim I got this point like 5 hours in. When running from whiterun to the northern town. I remember on the first run it being adventurous and fun. On my second run it felt like running to the end of the block. I think I did it in 2 minutes.

I even went around the mountains so I would miss some scripted troll or dragon fight. Missing a single fight, but going around fucking mountains was still a 2 minute trip.
>>
>>322939264

Also, there's nothing hardcore about these games. They're actually incredibly simple, even compared to mainstream RPGs of today like Skyrim. The only reason they appear hardcore is because of the graphics and obtuse interface.

>Or because of technical reasons.
Nope.
Wizardry for instance didn't had automapping until some re-releases of first few games after 7 was out.
>There's a reason why you don't see a revival of early dungeon crawlers like you do with other dead genres, nobody wants to play them anymore.
It's mostly caused by the fact that the last few attempts to do it properly were either under-budgeted, left alone after release or simply copies of old games.

Japanese copy Wizardry, particularly 5 to no end.
Wizardry 8 didn't had its issues adressed in patches because developer went down after releasing it. Some of them were later foxed by the community. Still a game that perfected the formula never saw follow-up because both dev studio and publisher were on the verge of bankruptcy when it was released and even if it wasn't fucked-up in places, it was likely that they wouldn't make-up in sales for the previous debts.
Wizards&Warriors was a product of one man trying to develop a game in a world where 30-man teams became a reality(and way before middleware became so common and well documented). On top of it it wasn't really scaled to the size of the "dev team" so bugs, bugs, bugs bugs, bugs everywhere.
Might and Magic 10 was very, VERY underbudgeted
Grimmrock and other similar games released recently(mostly copies, sometimes with some gimmicks) take what Dungeon Master left, make interface from the scratch and call it a day.
>>
>>322940041
Yes it is. and it also attempts to be a revival of early dungeon crawlers.

Those games all came much later. Wizardry 8 doesn't even have tile movement. I'm talking about the very first games. Wizardry 5. while still pretty old, came out nearly a decade after the original and is already a giant improvement.

>>322940892

It's an evolution of the genre, and none of the things I said about early RPGs apply to it.

battles were fine, and I was fine with 8, by 2003 though when I played it though 7 was extremeley outdated when I compared to other games I grew up on

The original Zelda.

I absolutely can't fucking stand it. I remember my dad and grandpa going apeshit together when I used an action replay to unlock it in Animal Crossing years and years ago, both of them having nostalgia bombs about how they used to call each other and talk about where they found hidden secrets or what doors not to break down, etc etc (my stepdad is a huge asshole, but surprisingly enough was a gigantic D&D geek in college). I just can't be arsed to play it. I couldn't stomach it until a few years ago when I downloaded the Japan-only English translation of the SNES remake and there was more color besides shit brown and puke green on the screen.

Ironically I have nothing but absolute love and admiration for Zelda II, go figure. Can't explain it, chief.
>>
>>322943254
Zelda was special when it came out. Most people hadn't played such an adventure game back then. Also, you were supposed to have the game manual and map to complement the game. Without those, the game makes little sense.
>>
>>322943807
Oh I completely understand. My grandpa and I used to play the original Metroid together and draw maps on graph paper. There's just something about the original Zelda that pushes the bile to the back of my throat. Can't explain it.

I have young grandparents. I'm about 24 now and my grandparents are only now in their early 70's.

You'd be surprised. When my grandpa was cleaning out his closets a few years ago, he gave me the very first ever editions of the D&D books in almost perfect condition, plus one of the original board sets where your pieces were just little folded pieces of paper. My grandpa is a big numbers guy, so DM'ing for my dad was a lot of fun for him back when my dad was really into it.

I really don't understand how dated graphics can prevent somebody from playing a good game. Do you get seizures or something?

Not him, but I'm not sure how low resolution textures and low poly models would cause that. Turn the lights on in your room? Sit a foot further away from your monitor?

My grandpa used to kick my ass in Super Mario World. Dude was past the age of eighty and served in the Korean war. He loved vidya.
