Riven had the main antagonist's theme peppered throughout the world, but the movement was only completed once you entered his own personal realm at the end of the game.

It helped signify the control he had over the plane, while at the same time not actually shoving it in your face. You felt it, rather than seeing it.

The arrow means that a motif is carried over from one song to another. It's story relevant so it has a pretty profound effect when you hear it.
