But the big problem is that theres not really much choice in what you do. You are always the good guy, you can't be the bad guy, too many essential NPCs, it's dumb af. Also, the gameplay is grindy.

The repairing system was great too cause you actually had to maintain and make your weapon or armor Is working at its highest performance. It's better than Bethesda's only other Fallout installment, which is exactly what I expected; just like how Skyrim was better than Oblivion on almost every front (although FO4 was better than FO3 in literally every way whereas Oblivion had at least some better things going on).
Problem is, the last Fallout game in people's minds is NV, so that's what they compare it to. It's a little silly to compare a game made by an actual good developer who knows how to create an RPG to fucking post-Morrowind Bethesda, so I don't see why people have been doing it so much.

Bethesda doesn't release complete shit; they're a mediocre dev team that releases watered down pseudo-RPGs that have strong open world exploration mechanics. They're fun to play for a lot of people because they're well made for what they are. Obsidian are a great dev team who know how to actually make a good RPG, so they made the better Fallout game. Why compare Obsidian to Bethesda? Why get salty because Bethesda followed the same pattern they did with Oblivion -> Skyrim as if you expected them to make an RPG as good as Obsidian's?
FO4 has plenty of merit as a game. As a Fallout game, not so much.

I'm gonna chime in for a second.
I've got a bunch of friends who loved FNV, some of which are pee cee gaaaimurs and some of which are "normies".
The "normies" had no problem getting into it because muh first person shooter mechanics, but they were fucking shit at it. They didn't get any of the nuances behind weapon requirements, how damage is calculated, the branching quest options, lore, etc. It all just went over their head. They played the game on Normal, most didn't even know they could go independent, kept bringing up how their sniper scope ways and how they should be able to hold their breath like in Call of Duty, didn't "get the hacking system". They beat it because the base game on Normal difficulty is pretty fucking easy and you have to be an absolute retard to not beat it on that difficulty but so much of the game just went over their heads.
The rest of my friends, particularly the P.C.G.A.M.E.R.S mostly got into the game a bunch, figured out every nuance and learned how to minmax as quickly as possible. They played on Very Hard and Hardcore and most of them got mods to make the game even harder. They roleplayed characters, employed personal restrictions like not being able to heal and shit, and pulled it off because they understood all of the game's mechanics and content so well.
FNV is really easy to get into for casuals because it's familiar territory: epic post-apocalyptic wasteland first person shooter bro. But it's got a decent amount of depth to satisfy those who actually give a shit, and that's the stuff that casual players completely miss out on. Even then, FNV isn't that complex of a game, but it's leagues ahead of FO3 and 4 in terms of complexity and depth. I thought this was universally agreed upon by now but I guess people are still stuck in 2010 and think F:NV is a glorified FO3 mod.
