>tfw some obscure jRPG series from the PS1/early PS2 era has some of the best vidya music ever

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTvZ4pJfGNk&index=1&list=PL284A9F9923332ED6

What the hell happened to this series, I did some research and saw that none of it is on PSN. I really wanna play it, the music and the setting seem cool as fuck. Any oldfags that played this shit wanna discuss the Wild Arms series?
>>
>Female lead
Trash.
>>
>>322888690
It's going downhill since they try to make that HEX battle system
>>
>>322889115
You can choose to play as 3 different main chracters in Wild Arms 3, she isn't really the lead character because the game doesn't have one. It's equivalent to trashing FF6 because the first person you play as is Terra.
>>
>>322888690
thats not WA 2nd ignition 2nd disc opening m8
>>
>>322888690

That's not the correct one though OP.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtF85qrBuCI
>>
>>322889518

There is nothing wrong with the HEX system. It's not as deep as they liked to think it is, but it's not bad either.

Honestly it just begged to go full-SRPG like XF finally did.

Too bad it never got a sequel to fix all it's faults.
>>
>>322888690

I remember picking this and Xenosaga episode 1 up from a Sears bargan bin quite a few years ago. I didn't think this was all that great, but all the Xenosaga games were pretty good.
>>
>>322889620

But Tera is the main character in FF6.
>>
>>322890390
*Terra
>>
>>322888690
WA was godlike and is coming back with a reveal most likely next year, reminder that Sony teased it at the FIRST ever Playstation Experience, I'd post it and discuss the series but it is 12am here and I'm on my phone
>>
>>322889707
The entire series has really awesome music m8. It's kind of depressing in a way. I wonder what that composer is up to nowadays, since Wild Arms never became super popular.
>>
How well did Wild Arms XF sell?
>>
>>322890390
Yes, and there is literally nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>322890390
I disagree. She is off being mopey for the most crucial parts of the game. If I'm not mistaken you can't even bring her to fight Kefka on the Floating Continent. Then after the world is destroyed she goes back to being mopey and the main party has to give her a pep talk to get her to join the party.

I would say the main characters of FF6 are Edgar, Celes, Setzer Locke and Sabin, not Terra.

Best pairing.
>>
>>322890747

The main composer of most of WA's music was a lovely gal named Michiko Naruke.

Sadly the more game the series got the less she worked on them, WA4 & 5 having maybe one or 2 songs made by her each.

I know she worked on some DS game after WA died, and she was also involved in SSB: Brawl doing a couple of the medleys. (IIRC the Zelda Medley and one of the DK song remixes? They're both quite good) I THINK she always did some work for the latest smash, but I can't say for sure.

>>322890816

Mediocre. A shame since it was fun.

>>322890625

I have been a die hard WA fan from the start of the series, and I know better than to believe in this. If it happens I'll be gladly surprised, but I know better than to have hope.

Even if it was true. I doubt it'd be good. Gameplay might have improved, but everything else only went downhill. God knows WA5 was only worth it for the many eastern eggs.

Good luck with that. There was some serious talent then when JRPGs were still in their prime.
>>
WA3 was garbage. I will gladly whack whoever designed the dungeons and overworld.
>>
>>322891913

Fuck you, WA2 and 3 had some of the most fun dungeon on jrpgs of their respective generations.

Overworlds were pretty standard jrpgs overworlds as well. You might as well complain about the overworld of every jrpg on the PS1.

Nigga, 3 might not be my favorite of the series, but I can admit it's easily the best of them all. Nevermind the fact it's the only one that actually resembles a western, what with it being the only one where the entire cast actually uses guns instead of freaking katanas and such. It also had some of the best overall OSTs.

Though I'd agree none of the highlights of the series can be found on it, WA2 wins in that regard, even though it also suffers from some of the bigger flaws on a game's ost. (For example, the normal battle theme being like ten seconds long. The only reason it doesn't loop 3 times per battle on average being because the battles themselves were so easy they'd be over in a single turn)
>>
>>322888690
Its freaking amazing. I still have a copy of it myself OP. If you have a ps2, you can probably find a copy of it on amazon for cheap.

Terra is the primary protagonist of World of Balance.
Celes is the primary protagonist of World of Ruin.

Anyone who claims one or the other is the "real" protagonist of the entire game is just trying to overexaggerate the importance of their waifu. The fact is that FFVI has no main character.

>B-but Dissidia
According to Dissidia FF1 has a main character called Warrior of Light who doesn't exist in the actual game and Golbez is the main villain of FFIV instead of Zemus which both are wrong.
>>
>>322892491

Shit niggah, if you think WA is bad because of that you must've never played Grandia. Or you prefer prerendered shit where you can't even be sure where you can or can't walk like Legend of Dragoon or FF8.

Wild Arms' dungeons were actually fun to traverse, and had real shit to do in them, unlike so many other jrpgs where they're just padding where you can grind and keep you busy between bosses and PLOT intermissions. Only other game from then I can remember had fun dungeons was Valkyrie Profile.

>>322893096

39 seconds is still too short, and it doesn't change the fact that WA2's battle themes were incredibly weak. The boss fight theme was just awful, and that was only mitigated a bit by the fact most of the times it'd be replaced by Knight Blazer's theme, and then that one was also weak. Only good battle theme on WA2 was the last boss', and that was actually an arrangement of the main theme. A great one though.

>>322894501

Nigga, re-read what I wrote. You're agreeing with me. WA2 battle theme is awful, it's just that WA2 also has some of the best songs in the series, including both it's intros and the ending. Some of the dungeon BGMs were pretty dope too, from memory Ruins Type 2 was nice.

Most of the actual background music was meh, specially all of the battle themes, both regular and boss battles.
>>
>>322894501
>>322894837

battle force is objectively well written
>>
>>322895083

Well subjectively I can say the song is awful, specially for a song you hear every 2 minutes. The fact you can hear it loop 3 or 4 times per battle during the beginning of the game (you know, before the game drops all pretense of difficulty) only makes it worse.

I don't know how someone can hate an RPG that is full of puzzles instead of just boring corridors - one you can even skip battles at that. The musics are l short but loop really well.

I pity you for not enjoying it, not even gonna say you have shit taste because you disagree with me. It's just a case where I think something is so good that I feel sorry for those who refuse to give it a chance.
>>
>>322896015

Well, even then my point stands. They're all pretty anime, it's just that anime itself changed with time. It's not a thing of it being more moe or kawaii or other such crap. It's just that trends change with time.

>>322896219

I know the plot guy from WA1 worked on that, but I don't think Michiko Naruke did. At least, when I saw it, none of the songs struck me as "with her style." Mind you, I know that's awfully subjective, but I did tell her work apart on the Brawl ost without being told.

>>322895993

Look into the Lunar series. Tons of jrpgs had intro songs like those, but back then they were mostly removed because localizations at the time thought they were too japanese. People love to whine about this these days as if it was something new. (Not that that makes it excusable, just pointing out it's as old as the sun)

Kanon is fun to use, but almost everyone else is better by the end.

Tim's full summons, Lilka's high magic, Brads railgun shit. She loses more of her FP to deal great damage, but the others don't necessarily need to or can recover it easily.

Getting eagle claw is like gacha drawing as well.

A shame since kanon is one of those fuck you bosses that complete obliterate people who did not get HP up. And would still be a big threat with it.

Wild arms 1 was awesome but then if went downhill fast, 3 sucks and 4 is horrible cuck game
>>
>>322896796

Kanon is a bit of a pain to upgrade, but yeah Tim is easily the best character in the game gameplay-wise. It's just that the game is easy enough that you don't need that kind of power to play through it. First Aid too strong.

Seriously a party wide healing spell that always goes first on the turn and he even starts with it so there's no need to unlock it at all. And he only gets better as you unlock new spells. Lilka might be best girl, but as a character Tim completely outclasses her. She's only relevant late game due to her mystic ability for optimal carrot usage.

>>322897316
Copyright issues certainly didn't help, but the reason most didn't even bother with it was that they just thought it wasn't worth it. Only Working Designs did, but some hated their liberal tendencies on translations. (I personally didn't mind at all)

>>322896959

You know, even if we disagree of the quality of that one song, you're my nigga.
>>
>>322897872
Lilka becomes better in between, then Tim outclasses her again once you get the final skills and the OP summons.

Mystic is OP as fuck and is more useful most of the game. It's just that tim gets so much shit 3/4 into the game and goes on till the end.
>>
>>322893282
They never said the characters brought in the rep the games are the main character or villains you faggot. Terra/Tina was chosen because she's the face of VI and Gobez was chosen because he's who you appear to be fighting through out most of IV and making a moveset for him was easier.

I like alot Kanon, problem is her magic resistence even with guardians and MR up points is downright shit.

Also Im not even using Lilka, Tim deals double her damage since he got at least 150 more points in SOR which is alot and First Aid is downright broken.

>>322897872

I found that feeding her a Tiny Flower does wonders when you try to unlock moves. Im still in disk 1 and Im lvl 53 with everybody.

I farmed in the lil island inside the Inner sea close to the Spiral Tower area, most enemies give you 2k+ exp and over 6k gella.
>>
So which of these games are actually good and which are not?
>>
>>322898579
They're RPGs so they're all shit.
>>
>>322898510
Who doesn't like Kanon?

In a perfect world, we would have a remake of 2 where we can pull back anastacia as a party member to assist us till we kill blazer.

Lilka does so much shit with mystic but i did discard her immediately for tim on my first run.

It's only the second run that i used her and saw her potential.

And then tim got more plot and the last guardians. And he proceeds to steam roll everything.
>>
>>322896959
>I don't know how someone can hate an RPG that is full of puzzles instead of just boring corridors

>Wild Arms 2 was rubbish in many ways, not just the crappy battle. I pity you for suffering through that shit game.

>>
>>322898510

Well, since the game's only difficulty comes from optional bosses, most characters were ranked according to their usefulness in those.

Kanon is overall very useful as her skill have no ammo, and her last ones are very strong on their own and be easily spammed, her speed makes her a valuable emergency healer as well.

Lilka is usually above Tim, even though Tim as we've said is way above her in both magic stat and versatility since her Mystic skill is downright essential for most, if not all of the bosses. It's just that good.

Third character is a toss up between Ashley (Knight Blazer) and Brad. Brad has the HP but most secret bosses deal enough damage to kill you even if you're using Brad, and since all of his most useful skills have very terrible ammo (you don't want to gimp attack, ammo can be reloaded and he has perfect accuracy with Aim so always go full power. maybe a single extra bullet on some ARMs) his usefullness in combat may vary.

Blazer is overall the best stats wise, but his best attacks either revert the transformation or downright (almost) kill him plus there's the issue with having to wait for the transformation, but late game you have enough FP that's its usually no more than 2 turns. Ashley himself is very mediocre outside of one ARM I can't recall the name of.

Also, I'm sure it wasn't one of the few games that used that plot point, even though none come to mind right now.

The plot was ok-ish, but I'd say it was it's execution where it shone. The whole theme about the nature of a hero was pretty well done, even if the plot itself was riddled with the usual japanese cliches. I personally loved it but I wouldn't say it's a literally marvel.

>I have both IRL.

Wish I could kill you and steal your cool shit.
I'd do things for even the regular Knight Blazer, which is actually cooler than the golden version.
>>
>>322900752
Cool.

I could never find anyone who liked any of the games before. How much did you get it for?

>>322900893
>Describing the characters like that

Why not just say
>muh hero ideals guy
>muh sister

and shit so we can simplify the characters with your retarded descriptions?

Then again, when you used muh on your previous post, i should have ignored you already. Which i will do after this post.
>>
>>322900805
I wasn't smart enough back then to figure this sort of thing out. I did like the game though so maybe I'll emulate it and play through it proper.
>>
>>322901264
None of my posts say "muh" idiot. Run away now and bury your head in the sand, bury your copy of this turd game while you are at it.
>>
>>322901701
Why do you sound so mad that someone enjoys something you don't?
>>
>>322901651

Oh, also another dick mo the game pulls after finding all the fossils you need is nwo EVERY enemy in the game will drop 2-3 dragon fossils everytime.

You need them because upgrading the sandcrawler is a must

>only Wild Arms I ever played was V for the ps2
>recently downloaded Wild Arms 2 to play on emulator
>early game there is already a part where soldiers turn into monsters
>even the MC

Unexpected.
Is the rest of the game this interesting?
I kinda dropped it when the witch girl releases the MC from jail. Kinda got stuck in that area.

>>322901701
I meant hurr.

Oh my. I replied. Well, that's that.

I could never get all the 108 stars without a faq.
>>
>>322902068
The tempo goes on for awhile, slows down, and then speeds up till the end. But it's interesting throughout.
>>
>>322901264
Standard one was around 4k yen I think. Got it over CDJapan, since Amiami got sold out immediately as soon as the link got posted back then on /a/ (fuck you, certain buyfag). Can't remember the Over version.
>>
>>322902068

>Kinda got stuck in that area.

...How?
Even 11 years old don't speak english me back in the 90s made it through the entire game easily.

And well, the game does drop off a bit afterwards, then picks up again all the way through the first CD. Second CD it falls off again, and even though it recovers it's never as good as the end of the first CD.
>>
>WA5 can't into PSN because of coding or some such shit

Fuck.
>>
After 3 they ditched the Old West setting (which was the most distinctive trait of the series) and tried to make it more anime-styled. So it's just had growing pains past the Playstation 2 era.

I think 3 had the best art style of the games and I agree about the music. 2 had the best characters though.
>>
>>322902728

I'm still waiting on 3 to be released on PSN, but knowing my luck I'd have to buy a PS4 or some such shit.

>>322900916

I remember not liking Liz and Ard back when I played it as a kid, but last year when I replayed the game I found them to be quite funny. Still wanted to just slap Liz until he shut up though.
>>
>>322902728
Whatever issues there were, someone fixed them because it came out on the jap PSN. It's just that no one bothered with a western release.
>>
>>322902217
Same all those bullshit ones in 3 and 5 were mind numbing.

Wild ARMs 2 was great though.

>childhood friend love interest stays in your hometown rather than coming along, which adds to the feeling of being on an adventure and sacrificing your home life for the sake of your life abroad
>Initial reveal about demonic possession that gradually reveals itself throughout the story, making you feel a little uneasy every time you exploit your power for personal gain
>The demonic power changes at times making it seem even more unstable, foreshadowing what's to come
>Using it is entirely optional, adding to the feeling of culpability for making use of it at all
>Each individual character (except Kanon) has a clear motive, backstory, and interesting character arc that makes you care about them
>Characters are deeply rooted in their motives and you frequently get scenes of them grappling with their personal issues

Wild ARMs 2 has some of the best character development and story choices in a JRPG. It's really great.

Posting the best character in the whole serie
>>
>>322902068

You have some oh shit moments in the game but the line is pretty straight
>>
>>322902068
It's my favourite Wild ARMs. The gameplay picks up as you get more party members and customization. The story never gets bland.
>>
>>322889620
Virginia is technically the lead character because the disappearance of her father is very important to the plot. I think the four of them are equally important, but she and Gallows have more significance in later episodes.

how does /v/ feel about the best pseudo light gun game to ever grace consoles

It doesn't really belong in this thread though.

We're talking about RPGs with western settings (aka Western RPGs or WRPGs).

>>322908814
There was a promo game of Wild arms 3 which was a rail shooter
