Maybe, 1 is pretty short and having a save with the 108 stars unlock some bonus in 2. 3 and 4 are often considered the weakest so even if you don't like them and liked the first two you should consider playing 5.
If you liked 4 there's a sequel named Suikoden Tactics
If you find 3 tedious there's a manga that's pretty good
If you liked 2 there's 2 visual novel taking place during the events of the game featuring different characters that were fan translated

Dragon system is the only thing 3 has going for it at the cost of all other party members being boring. 4 has excellent combo system which allows all party members to work in synergy, plus the fact that entire party participates in battle is great. You can move Nina to back row to regen mana when she can't cast anymore and she will passively heal you, Ershin will sometimes support you from back row with rocket punches.
And it's not like dragons in 4 are bad, they have some cool attacks and combo possibilities as dragon magic triggers the highest combo magic.

It's actually more likely that rape did not occur, in my mind, specifically because Momo acts like nothing happened, and if there was rape, if seems like they would want to play it up for drama. Just putting it in subtly like that with no one ever acknowledging it seems kind of odd.
It's worth mentioning, though, that Momo is still a child at the time, and likely has no concept of what sex is. She's incredibly smart, too. AND, the horse brothers are clearly horribly people, flat out running Ryu through with a sword while he wasn't looking when Ryu was like 7 years old or some shit.

Anyway, the time-skip is somewhere between 5 and 10 years, I'd say. Ryu goes from a child to a teenager, possibly a young adult. I always figured he was 7 or 8 in the child section, and 17 or 18 in part 2.

I know it was clearly the game's intention, but Ryu literally has no reason to care for any of this, everything the game expects you to care about in Ryu's perspective is stuff that you're simply just a witness of. The end of the game makes this intention apparent when Fou Lu asks you the questions. Fou Lu experiences everything directly while Ryu is simply just witnessing shit happening to other people.

DQ has the great merit of being a courageous product, but the result was abso-fucking-lutely underwhelming. and the game system was the worst thing. we've been trough this several times already, you have all the rights to love it but you can't say really that if it flopped the audience is at fault, since it have a kilometer-long list of flaws and shortcomings.
overall, it was a narrative involution from 4, and in the end people loved 3 and 4 for the story, so they really fucked up their priorities

Here's the recipe for a perfect BoF3 rape party
you need
-1 chain formation
-1 were Rei on number 1 of the chain
-1 tranced infinity Ryu on number 2
-1 Momo with Directive skill equipped
-3 fire absorbing armors
-3 fire damage weapons
-a couple of Holy Avengers
-all the MP seeds you can carry
first put the fire elemental equip on the characters. then, use Momo to replenish the Kaiser MP, use Holy avenger on the Kaiser and cast Directive when they're full. and voila! you got an unstoppable death machine. you don't even need to heal! the randomized attacks are absorbed by the armor and turns into HP!
just do not serve to fire absorbing enemies. the result would be pretty unsatisfactory, at least until you Ragnarok their arses away with Momo
