Shurelia just didn't click with me, yet it's required for the canon ending and 2 expects you to have done that.
In 2 you pick a girl and stick with it, or not, up to you. Also somewhat skill based blocking to the point you can have a fight you're supposed to lose to go indefinitely.

At3 really isn't that bad. It's true that the combat sucks, but it's not like you were playing these games for the combat. You're playing them for the setting/characters, and 3 is still beating the first game in that department, even if Saki is boring as shit. If you can enjoy 1 you can enjoy 3.

The girls dive development is split between them and their personalities so in the end they don't change for shit outside of acknowledgement that their split personalities are part of them too.
All the interesting characters that could have been Vanguards never join your party and instead you are stuck with doctor bland remembered only for his hot waifu who never joined your party.

Vanguards are always boring. The only one who was ever interesting was Cocona, and she comes back for 3 anyway. Doctor bland is boring, but it's not like church knight guy/giant military man/talking dog were any good either.
You're right that the split cosmospheres suck, but it's not like the first game was great there either. How much character development does Misha get? Fucking none. Aurica does kinda get development, except she develops from super shy with low self esteem to lunatic, which isn't really a huge improvement. Finnel does low self esteem much better. Saki and Tilia both suck (and Tilia's binary field is the worst thing ever holy fuck who thought this was a good idea), but one girl is better than zero.
I'm not trying to say it's as good as 2, because it's not, but it's at least on par with 1.

2 and nosurge are the best of the bunch. I like 2 more because of the relocalization patch but nosurge had better music. Too bad we were cockblocked with missing content/ending in the ps3 version by nisa. Fuck them with a cactus.
