Let a newbie to the series play MGS and they'll fall in love. So many memorable moments and just overall a classic. Gameplay got better in each game after, but story, level design, music, AI, and pacing are imbalanced in one way or another in the sequels.

I'm not going to argue about MGS3, but I really think MGS2 was a better game than MGSV. V didn't become the game it was supposed to be, and it's storytelling was uncharacteristically lacking for an MGS game. MGS2 was Kojima's baby, while MGSV was the product of a custody battle between Kojima and Konami and we're just lucky it didn't meet the same fate as Silent Hills and the caricature of Castlevania that is Lords of Shadow.
Either MGS1, MGS2, or MGSV is his opus. One of these is not like the other.

Is 3 really that bad? I got a copy of Snake Eater 3D yesterday for $5 and was planning to play it soon as my first MGS.
I know, I know, 3DS port. I almost didn't get Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D because everyone said the original was 60 FPS and that 30 FPS made it unplayable, and that it was a poor imitation of Donkey Kong Country with no water levels, but it was my first DKC (I had a Genesis back in the day) and I fucking loved it. I think I can put up with a less-than-perfect port, but is it really the second worst game in the series?

3 is the best or at least widely considered good.. These posters are being /v/ contrarians. the 3DS port is bad in terms of how it runs though. However, it does have better controls. Just be aware the entire time, the original did not have framerate dips like the 3DS version does. The original also had better lip syncing, ports mess it up for some reason.
