Why aren't there more RPG's like M&LSSS? The battle system is so much fun and it's a very solid game to the end.

Well, there are four other RPGs in the same series at least.

From all the information I've seen, Undertale has good characters but the battle system doesn't look that great

Paper Jam is coming out soon in the States, unless you already played it

South Park is kinda like Paper Mario

It has a good defensive battle system, way more in-depth than most other RPG's. Like M&L, it's actually more than just selecting attacks, and while most enemies have a bullet-hell style dodging system, most bosses change up the genre. For instance, one boss has attacks that require you to jump around platforms and another makes you stationary and you have to point your shield in the direction of oncoming attacks. If you like M&L I'd recommend at least pirating it.
>>
>>322764579
Undertale is good, but aside from tongue-in-cheek writing, it's nothing like M&L

It's likely the closest thing to M&L you're going to get.
>>
>>322765832
Tomato Adventure
>>
>>322765832
Tomato Adventure, which Alphadream made before M&L. Every character has a bunch of "gimmick" weapons with their own action commands. It's basically the proto-M&L.

It's fun but fan translation never and trying to brute force the moonrunes to just enjoy the gameplay you eventually hit a near brick wall with a mandatory timed randomized quiz.
>>
>>322765890
you can also play the first two Paper Marios and Mario RPG. Undertale doesn't have timing-based combat at all.
>>
>>322765890
I'd say Stick of Truth, although it plays more like Paper Mario than M&L
>>
>>322764773
Bowser's Inside Story is great, but let's not pretend that it's the only other good M&L game.

Partners in Time had a few odd design decisions, such as Bros. Items, but it still has some cool fights in it.
Dream Team is a bit dull at the start, but the back half of the game is fantastic.

The humor is still around in all of the games.

Haven't played Paper Jam yet, but it doesn't look terrible.
>>
Legit tho, Papyrus and Sans feel like they cone straight out of a Matmtio and akuigi game.
>>
>>322766702
If only because there are dozens of brothers in the M&L series. Especially in the first game.
>>
>>322766580
>Haven't played Paper Jam yet, but it doesn't look terrible.
Paper Jam has some middling aspects, but it's the best in the series in others. A lot of fun to play too.
>>
>>322766580
wait why doesnt /v/ like partners in time? ive never actually seen people give their reasons
>>
>>322764437
>No shadow hearts itt
It's basicly M&L with a horror atmosphere
>>
>>322768624
I liked all the Mario and Luigi's , but I think a lot of people didn't like partners in time's change to consumables for bro attacks, and I think the level design.
>>
Barkley Gaiden has an action command system.
>>
>>322769017
huh ok consumables i get, i dont remember much since i played it so long ago but if by level design you mean the platforming/puzzle parts i remember liking those, thought the aesthetics of the areas were good too
>>
>>322769462
PiT is the most linear of the 5.

It's also got a more serious tone than the rest.

It's still a fine game.
>>
>>322766580
>Doesnt look terrible

I sure hope you like ape escape levels every five minutes.

Whoever came up with the paper toad segments should be shot.
>>
>>322764437
Super Robot Taisen OG: Endless Frontier has a somewhat similar action based combat system, but its all about juggling your oponents. Whole lot of stuff you have to do back to back like cancle animations to make juggles easier, switching characters, and activating supports. Come for the boobs, stay for the combos
>>
>>322768624
Lack of overworld of any sort and short lenght are my main gripes with it, but it's still a great game, I don't think the rest of /v/ hates it either. It's just less brilliant than the other four games.
>>
>>322768624
The babies.
The lackluster villains and time travel plot.
The babies.
The Bros. Items.
The bosses that have a trillion HP and soak up hits unless you spam Bros. Items.
The lackluster representation of an OC donut steel chunk of the Mushroom Kingdom and some random areas including a lackluster "Yoshi's Island" after the first game did it's own unique setting so well.
No use of the mic or touch screen besides one sequence where you rub dirt off some paper. BIS explored this more thoroughly and successfully.
The Shroobs don't speak English save for the elder Princess Shroob at the end who says like 6 sentences in English before screeching symbols. Villains who you can't even understand or relate to make for poor villains overall.
The babies.

Although, in it's defense, some of the music and bosses are pretty good, and as retarded and inevitably asinine a time travel plot will come to be, the story was a tad darker than most Mario games will ever be, with aliens destroying Toad Town and using them as batteries and such.

But quite frankly, it's a decidedly mediocre Mario & Luigi. I compare it to the leap in improvement Pokemon B/W did to Pokemon B/W2 with PiT to BIS. The DS and it's long lifespan gave devs more time to fine tune their games and take advantage of the handheld more in the sequela.
>>
>>322769582
>linear
ok i got it now

It pains me that there's no Adventure Time game that uses this battle system straight up.

It's fucking perfect for it, yet they want to spend their time doing shit Zelda clones.

Not in the same number crunching way that action commands for attacks are, no, but just like Mario & Luigi you'll still be able to avoid all damage if you are good at the game and have figured the enemy's attack pattern out.

By the way, Paper Jam has some of the best boss battles in the series.

Playing Superstar Saga recently makes me notice how far they've come along with combat.
They're a lot more creative.

SSS>BIS>PiT>DT
For gameplay

DT's pacing is fuck awful though, mainly because the game isn't funny and the characters aren't very good.
