$599

>premium build quality
>solid fabric enclosure
>integrated AMP, DAC, headphones, and microphone
>2 90 Hz CUSTOM high resolution global update panels
>2 custom hybrid fresnel lenses
>extra foam spacers/facial interfaces
>total 200-300 custom parts
>bundled XBOne controller
>bundled games
>premium carrying case
>great customer support
>Apple tier everything

Not to mention Palmer's own posts emphasizing how expensive it'll be.

He already confirmed it's not going to be lower than $350.

And if it wasn't such a bad price, there wouldn't be any reason to not announcing it already.

It's going to cost a lot.

I can point you towards a source for almost everything I said, but that's way too much work. If you want a specific one, just ask for it and I can provide it. He just announced the premium case on Twitter, for example.

$599 is just speculative but it makes a lot of sense for what you're getting.

Another thing is the engineering of the back of the headset. It was mentioned that getting the precision of the LEDs down and then having that wired to the back of the headset, across the semi-rigid strap system, in an elegant way, was a challenge.

They had one job man, one job.
I'd rather they went with a VR HMD that was near DK2 in spec with a release price around $400 bundled with motion controllers instead of a gamepad with lower minimum system requirements.

Instead we have both competitors going for a premium prices and no one in the PCVR market to fill the massive gap in the lower end.

After reading through all of that, plus the links to the further investigations, it seems that Valve had sacrificed latency in order achieve faster framerate, while Oculus went with a lower latency approach that comes with an overhead. Interesting technicalities. Thanks for the link.

I know people love to shitpost, it's fun sometimes. But I don't understand why make all this efforts to create a false advertise that will be canned the next day.
It will never be 599.
The first generation of rift will be sold at manufacturing cost or even less. And this thing doesn't cost 599 to make.

>>
>>322733480
I just think it's likely it'll be pretty expensive. I'll admit $599 is kind of arbritrary on my part. Well actually it kind of isn't. Think of it this way, if you can make people expect it'll be more expensive than what it will actually be, and you reveal it as really cheap, wouldn't that be better than the other way around? A part of what I was trying to do was manage expectations.

It looks like they will open up preorders once the timer is up. Sly move so they can bank on people's excitement before HTC makes its announcement about its breakthrough.

It is best to wait, I am impatient if the price is 450 or less I am ordering one. 500+ would be asking too much for 1080x1200 per eye and no motion controllers.

I could get a 28" 4K TN panel monitor for that price or 1440p IPS which would look miles better.

I think waiting for eye tracking to be integrated and a larger selection of titles with motion controllers support to release would be a wiser option, but that could be a year's worth of waiting if not more.
>>
>>322734831
no they will let you preorder, then you get a surpirse amount charged off your credit card

>>
Shit yeah I'll be buying it, I don't even care what it costs. VR is insanely good. Naysayers need to try it to understand.
>>
>>322735441
>Sly move so they can bank on people's excitement before HTC makes its announcement about its breakthrough.
It's the other way around. The pre-order announcement was made before HTC announced their delay with their bullshit "breakthrough". Obviously trying to make people wait for their shit.
>>
>>322735524
Man I wish one company that is not some no name pushed for a lower end VR HMD on par with the DK2 or PSVR for PC.

$400~$450 bundled with a motion controller, that would have been miles better than a premium $500+ HMD bundled with a gamepad.

If the rift and vive are going to be 500+ then PSVR is going to steal their their thunder.
I hope some peripheral maker targets the $300 region for HMD alone with good bang for buck using openVR and lighthouse.
>>
>>322735370
>2016
>still using a CRT monitor

>>
>>322736664
The reason manufacturers switched to LCD displays was mainly the manufacturing cost. You're literally a corporate bitch if you support a technology with inferior color depth, input lag, refresh rates and lifespan only because it takes less space in your office desk and strains your eyes less because you're retarded and ran your CRTs at 60 or 75hz
>>
>>322736664
>not using an oscilloscope
>>
>>322737043
>input lag

This is the worst bit.

I understand why Nintendo made the Wii primarily for CRTs.

I tried hooking it up to a flat-screen at the time, and the pointer delay was big enough that it just became no fun to use the device at all.

This has been remidied since with newer tvs and running Wii games on the Wii U over HDMI, but it's still not as fast.
