The first one is pretty bullshit, they should have had a part where a hallow opens a chest in front of you and gets eaten so then you'd at least know they exist. After the first one though, you can check every chest by seeing if your camera will go through it, or if you realize the chain position is completely different then you can just look at them.

I kept up with DaS before it was released and in one of the gameplay videos they showed off a mimic so I knew to give every chest a smack before opening. When the one in Sen's Fortress did come to life it still killed me because those bastards are tough as fuck.
