Help /v/, can I get a second opinion on what Final Fantasy 4 game I should play, never played The After Years sequel.
I've beaten the GBA version years ago but now that the DS version is on steam with the sequel I'm wondering if it's a good remake or not
I heard that they have a customization system for characters so it doesn't feel like it adds nothing to the table. Also heard the difficulty spike makes it fun if you're looking for a challenge.
But I'm conflicted on getting the PSP Complete version instead. Does the PSP version have the new 'Augment' system like the DS version?

I feel like the DS version will feel like it will add something more dynamic to the cutscenes, models don't look that bad, I can get by them (better than 3's).
On the other hand, I love the sprite work in the PSP versions

PSP version is based on the old GBA version which in turn is based on american SNES version just with added content.
The SNES version was known as "EasyType" while Jap was "HardType". That's because American version was made massively easier.
Since it's based on the GBA version (which was based on SNES) it has all the SNES limitations as well such as only max 50 item count of one item and limited inventory space as well as various bugs in mechanics and is obviously much easier.
DS/Mobile/PC version is the definitive version.

PSP version is best version. I've played every version of FF4 aside from the GBA version, and while the DS/ Android/ Steam version isn't terrible, I would say it's 2nd best behind the PSP version.

FF4 is my favorite FF so you really can't go wrong with any port aside from the PSX port, and even that one isn't that bad. I'm not a fan of the augment system in the DS version if only because unless you use a guide there's no way to use the system properly. Aside from that, the DS version was great. I was a big fan of the spritework in the PSP version, but have still not played The After Years.

GBA was identical to SNES, it just had extra dungeons and better translation, no other improvements. Meaning GBA was still heavily dumbed down and had the dogshit SNES limitations and bugs. Those carried over to the PSP version.

I like 6 a lot, but it isn't my favorite. I really like the first half of the game and how the narrative flows, but everything in the WoR just seems too disorganized for my taste once you get the airship. I hate missing/forgetting things in my games, so when I got to that part I had to resort to a guide to make sure I didn't miss anythingonly to discover that I fucked up by not getting the Ultima weapon and should have waited for Shadow on the floating island.
I did like the freedom it gave you to prep for Kefka's Tower, but it just wasn't my cup of tea after the first part of the game. Still fantastic, though.

For 6 I'm playing it with a color and sound restoration patch you can just look up.
It has an updated script and better at naming spells and items.
It also has the famous Dragon's Den as post game GBA exclusive but I have not beaten the original game yet.
Definitely get the gba version patched.

If you can read Japanese: Play the SFC Hard type version.
If you can't: Well that sucks, there's no perfect English version. Play the PSP version if you want something closer to the original gameplay that maintains the difficulty level. Just know that the localization is based on a localization based on the PSX localization which is pretty shit. If you want the best English localization available, play the DS/iOS/Android/PC version, though as you already know, the gameplay is completely different.

For scaling the tower? Equipment matters more than characters, but try to even out the teams as much as possible. Terra, Celes and Relm should ideally be on different teams as they're the most magetastic.
I split up Edgar/Sabin/Shadow the same way, they usually end up as their team's damage output.
Locke/Cyan/Setzer get split up, and the 4th member of each party is a toss up.
As for the final battle, I usually do Terra, Celes, Locke and Edgar.
