I'm going with $500 for the HMD and $150 for Touch which will come out this holiday season.

Remember:

VR will be something everyone wants before it's something everyone can afford. --Palmer Luckey
>>
what will it have to do with facebook? can we reasonably expect porn for it?
>>
>>322628523
>expect porn
It's already there. You can expect more porn.
>>
>>322628523

Gaming is just the facade bro. We are all on it for the porn. There's no way we won't have it.
>>
Wouldn't be surprised if it's $650.
>>
>>322628523

Other than funding it has nothing to do with Facebook. Zuckerberg sees VR as an extremely important future communications platform (and he's right) but they are smart enough to know they'd kill their product by forcing any FB integration, especially considering the niche enthusiast market they are targeting.

There is already porn too and some of it's very good.
>>
Any good flight sims that work with it?
>>
Is the 970 going to drop in price much by the rift's launch?
>>
>>322628868

I know DCS and Flight Sim X work on the DK2 already.

VR is a huge upgrade for sim games so it's hard to imagine developers not jumping on the bandwagon.
>>
>>322628983
Id wait for the next gen cards with full dx12 support desu.
>>
>>322628983

hopefully It will, next nvidia pascal might come at june or july at the shortest, but their release it's a meme at this point so we shouldn't expect them to release it

the best bet is waiting or buying a 980 used imo

the 970 was deprecated six months ago and will most likely be when the rift releases

>>322629765

I'm an early adopter and agree.

The CV1 is just a nicer version of what I've already been using for ages. Still awesome, but I'm leaning heavily towards the Vive at this point, even without their "breakthrough". The first thing you want to do when you try VR is to reach out and interact with things, even in seated situations. A standard controller holds back the whole experience.

I've gone from planning on pre-ordering both to deciding to just wait for pricing and all of the details and some reviews.

>>
>>322628350
If it is more than 500, no buy.
650 with touch is already pushing the limits of my budget. Was expecting 350~450 with some room to purchase a few games.

I hope they bundle a game with touch, but that was delayed to H2 so I have time to save up some more dosh.

If HTC vive with motion controls launches earlier with a tolerable price for its features, I'll consider it over the rift. They have until CES to wow me, if they stall on price and their big "breakthrough" is a load of hot air they can suck a fat one.

450 is my guess. Two games, paired headphones, and Xbox One controller? I'd be surprised if it was less than 450.
>>
>>322623089
There needs to be some kind of intuitive standard interface. KB/M doesn't work as well when you can't see your hands, whereas a controller is much more natural for most people.

>>
>>322628523
No, actually, there's no overt interference, which is surprising, but good. Facebook is presumably doing a lot behind closed doors with the tech as far as social communications and that sort of thing, but they're keeping their hands off the tech itself.

As far as porn, oh boy. None of it's going to be on the Oculus store, but there's going to be plenty outside of it.

>>322635586
I'm not saying it's impossible to touch-type, but using a controller is much more accessible in a situation where you're effectively blind, especially for a wider audience.

Of course you'll still be able to use a keyboard, but the controller is bundled for accessibility and for a standard interface.

If you don't want it, you can sell it and get a significant amount of money back.
>>
>>322636319
Why not just give the option to not get a xbone controller? I already have plenty of other controllers and don't want to go through the hassle selling one.
>>
>>322636673
Because the controller's manufacturing costs are smaller than you think, and it's being sold at a loss anyway. It won't really affect the price by a significant margin. If you ebay it at less than retail price, the net cost will be less than the device without the controller in the first place.
>>
400 quid and I'll bite. Might sell the Xbone controller to recoup some, because I already own it.

The purpose of the Facebook acquisition and injection of money was so that Oculus could have enough R&D to produce a price-leading product. Zuckerberg had said he wanted to see it selling for no more than $100 and that it would keep it on top of the market and highly accessible to consumers.

Whether they achieve this or not will be interesting and highly impressive if maintains its build quality.

How many other VR devices are we seeing in the near future that aren't exclusive to consoles or certain systems? All i can think of atm is the HTC Vive- which could be exclusive to steam machines; though I have personally no idea.

How much of a gaming machine do you need for this? Like how much extra performance does the VR bullshit take beyond the game itself? I'll admit I know little about the VR wars.

If it's $400-450 I'll be tempted. Past that and I'll just wait and see how things play out.
>>
>>322641869

You should be aiming for an over 9000 3dmark Firestrike score.
>>
>>322641869
tl;dr – Given the challenges around VR graphics performance, the Rift will have a recommended specification to ensure that developers can optimize for a known hardware configuration, which ensures a better player experience of comfortable sustained presence. The recommended PC specification is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD 290, Intel i5-4590, and 8GB RAM. This configuration will be held for the lifetime of the Rift and should drop in price over time.

also
>On the raw rendering costs: a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second. At the default eye-target scale, the Rift’s rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.

>>
>>322641869

What's really interesting is that once foveated rendering gets added to HMDs (most likely coming 2nd gen), you'll be able to do much better graphics at much less performance cost compared to a 2D screen. Once that happens VR will be an objectively superior platform for games.

If you drop below the refresh rate the image will judder and you will feel sick.

Also, you could scale up lower resolutions but they will look like complete shit. Clarity and sharpness is already one of the weak points of the Rift/Vive and that would make it even worse. You need a bit higher rendering resolution to account for distortion correction.

I have no idea. I'm guessing they're just thumb rests, but I guess we'll find out soon.
