Look at Toby Fox, he started out making Mother 2 mods and chiptune music, eventually got involved with some popular webcomics, and made Undertale which made like a million dollars. The gameplay was alright. It could've used some more depth and definitely didn't explore the full extent of what it could do, but it was a novel concept.

Earthbound/Mother series for one, even if it's not indie it's still an extremely good series that everyone should play at least one of the games, either Earthbound or Mother 3.
