They could go the novel path and have him be the adopted son.
Story could be about him being adopted as Guan Yu's son (maybe in a stage where he's defending himself against bandits), struggling to live up to the Guan name and eventually accepting his new family name and dying at Mai Castle as Guan Ping, son of Guan Yu.
That's one way to make him relevant and stand out from the other Guan kids.

Ping I feel more pity for. He was introduced as a guy who for some reason was infatuated with Xing Cai which you know was not going to go anywhere and that was cemented when Liu Shan was added. Then he just becomes more and more of a background cataract error. Showing up only in Fan Castle to die. Then his treatment in WO3 which I won't go into.
Guan Suo was a confounding add that doesn't really add anything except to bring in Bao Sanniang who also doesn't add anything except eye candy.
Yinping is another odd choice. Fun movesets and personality and cute looks. But you thought that the point of her was to be part of the dissenting between Shu and Wu but she doesn't tie in to that scenario at all except be part of the Shu forces.
Guan Xing I literally feel nothing for and it seems like person - wise he's Guan Ping 2.0

So I'm 25 episodes into The Three Kingdoms. This shit is so slow it seems like I could just watch every other episode and still follow the story.
Also, Cao Cao is probably the most bad ass human being who ever lived.
