It sounds edgy as hell I know, but the people would have to undergo even more struggles if New Vegas was taken by either one. NCR was stretched way too far which led to raiders and bandits fucking up those communities. The Legion was already on a path of wrath. It'd be hard for the reformed tribals to lay down their weapons and eventually have Lanius as its new leader. They'd just be plunged into civil wars just like the empire they try to emulate. The solution isn't perfect, and saving obviously is the better option, but they'll continue with the same damn conflicts with each new territory they find themselves in.

I personally always pronounced it as E-D-E. Only when I started playing the game a few more times and after wiki visits on making sure that I didn't miss any quest did my mind finally piece it together. Although I can't convert to Eddy because it still wants to pronounce it as the other one.
