Gameplay was pretty bad. It took what was bad about Fusion and enhanced it to the Nth degree. I wouldn't even call it decent personally. Switching between third and first person was always disorienting and jumping never felt right.

Gameplay was shit.
I dont care about story in Metroid and I think that most Metroid games are nothing amazing, but Other M was just bad.
The dodge gave you way too many invincibility frames and recovered too quickly so you could just spam it nonstop and be invincible.
The missile mechanic was AWFUL. It wouldve worked if they used the nunchuck but they insisted on Wiimote controls alone which was stupid.
Also 3D movement with a fucking D-Pad.
Favorite Zero Mission
Bad (outside of Other M) original. I want to live it but rooms look so samey that it's annoying trying to map everything out. I respect the fuck out of it for a NES game but I can't ever go back to it.

Didnt say the switching was what was right. But the not quite 2D not quite 3D 'sidescroll' was actually a neat twist on an old classic design. The ability to switch from 1P to 3P is neat but how it was handled was ass. Good mechanic bad execution.

I liked the missile mechanic. A lot, actually.
The dodge mechanic gave a lot of wiggle room but new ideas can be fine tuned. Thats one that could actually be fairly awesome if the training wheels were dialed back a bit.
I liked the gameplay of Other M for what it did right. The boss fights were decent, the music was good (best Ridley theme IMO). The map layout was good.
If you take what Other M did right, give it some polish and utterly forget its story ever happened, you could make another Samus-centered Metroid game and have it be well received.

To me it didn't do anything right. Yeah 3rd person to 1st was neat but HORRIBLY done. The action really felt bad. Jumping was bad. Boss fights wasn't that fun to me. Getting locked out over and over was even worse than in Fusion. The dodge like that other Anon said was too easy to do and made everything boring. The whole "can't use this because my not boyfriend told me not too" was one of the worse excuse in a Metroid game. Naw to me there's not one positive thing to really say about Other M. You might have enjoyed some of it but I can't think of anything from Other M I want to see again.
What are people's thoughts on Recore?

Because it required thought to use in close quarters (e.g Ridley, volcano hydra boss thing) and allowed you to not have to be stingy with your missiles. IF you could find the opening to use it. Options are a good thing.

I pretty much agrre with most of this. I understood what they wanted to do with the story, it was just done badly.
Gameplay was decent. I think it was a good foundation to build upon. Work on a bigger map, new upgrades, better mechanics, remove the crappy pixel hunt.
It's not this horror we need to forget. Look at what was done wrong from an objective view and work on improving it.

You know what really pisses me off about Federation Force? It's a really good concept.
A spin off kind of in the style of Republic Commando? Hell yeah, I'd have eaten that up. but instead we got this overly cutesy thing that didn't match the Metroid's tone at all, with graphics barely looking better than Hunters from 10 years ago.

It's obvious that Nintendo is just being cheap on everything right now. They just want to ride the wave until NX. And really no one would really care about Federation Force if Nintendo didn't ignore the series for so long. The game is basically a Prime version of Triforce Heroes. The difference is there are still Nintendo love for Zelda so when that came out people where just shrugging going "might be neat".

The only problem with Federation Force is the timing of its release. We're in a Metroid drought after the worst game of the franchise, so something like FF makes Nintendo look like they're doing anything but trying to please the fans.
If FF came out between Prime 2 and 3 then nobody with any sense would have any problems with it. It'd just be a little extra between other good games being released.

I don't 100% know about that. Stylistically it's a weird departure from the past games with its super deformed designs, which, after Prime Hunters, is odd, since that game was perfectly capable of pulling off more standard designs.
Plus, just look at it. It doesn't look that much better than Hunters. Hunters was a fucking feast for the eyes back in 2005, and was a great display of what the DS was able to do. Federation Force? It's just taking that cop out chibi design model that so many games now use on the system because it's easier.

There was also that Metroid Dread or whatever it was going to be called. The problem is that Sakamoto is a guy that loves changing things in his games. I mean he looked at Mario/Wario Land and turned it into Wario Ware which turned into Rhythm Heaven. He most likely got bored with Metroid and thought he could do something new with Fusion and Other M. But since the reaction was completely negative he washed his hands of it. And also he's not really willing to hand the game off to someone. And I feel Retro doesn't want to make another Prime game.

There took a massive risk with Prime 1 if you think about it. It was the first Metroid game in almost a decade, the first Metroid game after Super Metroid even, and changing it to first person was something that could have gone really badly.
If they can do that though, and turn it into one of the most beloved games in the franchise, and on the Gamecube as a whole, I think they could probably do it again.

Sakamoto is still in charge of traditional Metroid, plus Takahashi said that they were planning a traditional Metroid back at e3 2014 so I expect to see a traditional Metroid announced at this years e3. Federation Force is just Metroid's Triforce Hero's to keep us waiting.
