When I was a teenager IX was my favorite FF game of the PSX era
After playing through all of the as an adult, I have to say that 7 is by far the best in both story and gameplay, 8 gets way too much shit, and 9 is incredibly overrated.
IX did have the best FMV's though, I will give it that.

How? When it reaches the 99,999 stage, granted, but as do they all. How is the combat all that different to the PS1 era games? Aside from swapping members mid battle, which was a great edition and having turns listed due to differing speed.

It's not the mind fucky JRPG bullshit that's the problem. It's the absolutely nonsensical actions the characters take for no purpose other than to move the plot to the next location and create some ridiculously contrived melodrama.

Combat never grows beyond the tutorial. At the start of the game you learn to use Lulu on magical enemies, Wakka on flying enemies, Tidus for fast enemies, and Auron/Kimahri for armored enemies, and outside of a few specific boss fights, that's all you do for the entire game. Trying any kind of alternate strategy is almost always ineffective and results in the game straight up telling you to go back to what you learned in the tutorial.

If you're talking about the Expert Sphere Grid, then sure, but the standard version is completely linear and offers no freedom, up until the end of the game when you're able to go around every node with every character, which defeats the entire point.

It's funny to me that Final Fantasy VIII somehow became a "hardcore" game considering it was popular as fuck when it first came out. I knew tons of people at school who had played it, maybe not as many who played Pokemon but still it was a lot.
I think it's comparable to Zelda II which was also very popular when it came out but now apparently it's only loved by the "hardcore" fans.

It's hardcore because it requires you to actually put in the time and effort to get gud and manage your characters, and it actually punishes you for taking the easy way out and grinding unlike most JRPGs which reward it. Yes you could break the game but no casual would know how to do it.
