Decent stand alone title.
Shit DMC game.
It's pretty bad.
The gameplay, while not as slow as a lot of people are wont to label it, is pretty goddamn limited compared to 3 and 4. The color-coded enemies limit your combos early on until you get the alts for the red and blue, the moveset is pretty small, and the use of Unreal Engine makes breaking the game easy.
Beyond that, the story is basically They Live with demons instead of zombies. Donte does indeed say FUCK YOU, but that's a total of one scene where he does, plus one scene where he references an aborted baby to make Mundus angry enough t expose himself. Besides that, he's a similar tangent to old Dante, snarking around and killing demons. Vorgil is now a fedoracore faggot who shoots people in the back, and everyone else is just window dressing.
In short, just pirate it or don't bother. Supposedly the Definitive Edition fixed some of the problems, but it's console exclusive.

Taken by itself, it's fine. The gameplay is tight and the story is goofy. It's just not what I expected or wanted from a new DMC.

Ninja Theory just can't make very good gameplay, it's not awful but just very 'meh.' The shit story doesn't help it either.
I liked it a hell of a lot more than I did DMC4. It took a different approach to the combat, made it feel like its own thing, but it was still smooth and fun to combo the various weapons together. Art style is pretty undeniably amazing, and the music's not too bad if you're into that sort of thing.
As someone who's never considered himself a Devil May Cry fan, I enjoyed my playthrough.

Because the average DMC fan played this game for about 10 minutes and never saw his development over the course of the game.
He's an immature dick at first, but after travelling through his old home in Limbo, he begins to understand what's at stake and what he must do. By the end of the game, he's matured enough to realize his place and that his brother's plans are pretty terrible.

The art is bland and oversaturated. Donte has zero redeeming qualities as a character, and his entire story arc turns him from completely cringeworthy and annoying to bland and boring. The enemy AI is a huge step down from literally any other entry in the series and the combat simply is not Devil May Cry. If you've ever played a DMC game and even slightly enjoyed it, don't get it.

For one thing the new PS4 and Xbone versions are much better and have many improvements.
