The reason I listen to subbed Japanese over English despite not understanding a word of it is because Japanese games usually involve lines that sound plain cringey when said in English. It's just a culture difference, the character actions (some of which are typical in Japan and not in the west, see pic related) are animated to go along with Japanese sentence structure, lines are delivered differently with emphasis on different parts. When it gets translated to English they fuck it all up, along with the female English voices going weirdly high pitched to go along with 'kawaii' anime characters.
If I understood Japanese perfectly then I'd probably cringe at it just as much, but if I'm reading and listening to a voice I don't understand it's a very different experience to hearing every inflection and emphasized word and understanding perfectly how weird it sounds.
If I could I'd have Eng VA for males and Jap VA for females.
