You'll probably like DS1 more, but DS2 isn't a bad game. DS2's biggest problems are that it's too linear, too easy, and has too much immersion-breaking bloating of items and lore, and all the bosses and enemies are boring humanoid designs. I beat DaS before playing DaSII, and I still really like DaSII despite its flaws.

Whenever a great game comes out and gets a sequel that isn't perfect, people will naturally cherrypick the everloving shit out of its flaws while ignoring the flaws of the first game, since it now serves as a basis (ie; template) for comparison. Hyper-autismo /v/ is no exception. If DaS is a 10/10, DaS2 is an 8/10.

It depends on the game. Just because AAA publishers have completely forgotten what the word sequel means and just slap "GAME 37" on the box to sell copies through brand recognition doesn't mean it's always ok to just play the newest game in a series.

For example, I'm playing Trails in the Sky SC right now, and you'd have to be a fucking idiot to not play the first one first because you wouldn't even remotely know what the fuck is going on.


Dark Souls 2 isn't like that, but people should still play the other games in the series first because Dark Souls 2 is just much shittier.

The games are good because of there level design, can you imagine a whole game that's 90% the second half of Darkroot?

It wouldn't work, you'd get lost all the time, combat would be abysmal because you'd have all the space in the world, there'd have to be bonfires every few hundred feet or you'd suffer through tedious walks back through a boring open field.

So much of the reason these games are good is the level design, open world works in games focused on vechiles (GTA) or games that want exploring a massive world to be the primary focus (Elder Scrolls, Witcher).

I've gotten every achievement / Platinum trophy for every single Souls game including Bloodborne, TWICE for Demon's Souls (Chinese AND American versions) AND Dark Souls 1 (360 and PC versions). I've also beaten Demon's Souls and DS1 at SL1.

DS2 isn't bad, but I can understand some criticisms. All Souls games have their positives and negatives which make it really difficult to say one is better than the other.

DS2 stepped down on level structure (even though DaS is at fault for the same thing, but not as bad as this game) due to time constraints, weapon degradation being too unfair, and adaptability (invincibility frames) being tied to skill points.

Isn't Dark Souls technically an open-world game? It even has no loading screens between areas, everything's interconnected.

But I definitely agree that most open-world games are absolute trash with no level design whatsoever, just flat plains and filler. I was just wondering if Dark Souls would still be classified as open-world despite its excellent level design.

While I agree that DaS level design is the best in the series. I much prefer DaS2 just because there's much more variety to play as and system is pretty much expanded with the spells and combat and thus giving you more replay value. I understand it's not as fast as DaS but it doesn't bother me. The only real complaint that I have aside from the level design (which isn't really that terrible to begin with) is the I-frame sync with the stat and some broken ass poise.

Plus the PvP is at least tolerable compared to the 3 games.

STALKER series did it well IMO. I think open worlds need to have immersion as their central pillar. If you're really aware that your just out to collect x flowers and kill y rats then wandering is tedious, whereas if the world is immersive (Fallout, for instance) it makes it more fun to explore.

Dragon's Dogma was made much worse by having a majority of the main game in shitty, open, flat terrain. The vanilla game was unplayable, only BBI redeemed it.

Yeah.
The Metroid level design is one based on exploring a gradually opening world. The world is all technically open to you, you just need specific abilities to access it. Nothing is cut off from the world by a load screen, it's all connected together.

Open world doesn't mean "big Skyrim wasteland". You could have an open world game set in a narrow maze.

That just means it's nonlinear and interconnected. It's true that dark souls is technically an open world game, but it still deals with "levels". Most open world games like currently popular are one big flat map, where you can walk kilometers in any direction relatively unhindered.

There's no official definition though so it's up to each man to define for himself, but it's relatively clear what OP meant.
