Spider-man 1 on the PS1 had the absolute best style and writing to ever grace a Spider-man game.
Spider-Man was witty, but not annoyingly so, he was also just badass as fuck. Too often I think people who write Spider-man makes him into too much of a dork, that is supposed to be a part of him sure, but utlimately, Spider-Man is a superhero, and superheroes are supposed to be badass as fuck.
The person who decided Neversoft should be the guys to make a Spider-man game was a fucking genius.

I remember there being a scene where Spidey and Venom are guessing who could be behind the stealing of the equipment and Venom goes through the most unlikely supervillians, it's hilarious.

I actually re-played this a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at how well it holds up.
It's also quite the challenge on hard. Some of the boss fights took me fucking ages - you've got to memorise their patterns of attack and exploit their behaviour to really stand a chance.

I had the PC version. It was broken as fuck but I still played it every day. I remember that in the opening of the first level, where spidey climbs up a building, you could make him jump off and die mid-cutscene by pressing jump. Good times.

No way! I don't think I figured that one out. My strategy was kiting him at a close-but-not-too-close distance so that he wouldn't trigger that unavoidable ranged attack and I could pretty consistently dodge him if he threw punches. I think he has a brief window after a melee attack in which you can hit him and dart away without him hitting you too, so that's all I did. It took fucking ages.

Compared to the combat in other Spider-Man games I guess it was better, but it was still pretty bad. They completely fucked up the web swing mechanics though, which were the best part of the previous Spider-Man games. If you notice the webs weren't always anchored, they just had to be "near" something
