Or go under the bridge, and shoot his tail with a bow until he dies. You can get a bow from the first blacksmith, but you will have to make your way past the boar to the cathedral, and come back later.

Actually, these are the imbeciles. If you have the master key, you can slip behind Havel, and go straight to the blacksmith. Or go through Anor Londo and straight down to the fireswamp. You could have gone down through the crypt past the graveyard, but it would be way too hard for a new player.

The two most simple ways to do this
1. Just forget about the dragon and go under the bridge. You come out behind him anyway
2. Stand still for like 15 seconds and he'll jump down to look for you. Run past him and around the side to avoid his fire.

You get a bow literally underneath where you are standing.
There is a wooden post in the picture, that's connected to a staircase go down that. kick the ladder that's there and use the bonfire if you need to, then go out the door and follow the narrow path under the bridge. you get a bow there.
You can actually kill the drake there with the bow by shooting it's tail, which will get you the drake sword.
Even so; you don't actually need to get past it, you go under the bridge and get to the same place anyway.
