I bought this game during the steam sales and while i like fighting games i was never that good at them, this game just makes me feel like an absolute scrub, that bieng said i do like the game.

Do the tutorial, do the challenges, arcade mode, etc. All that really helps a lot, having a friend of similar skill level to play against helps too. Join newcomer lobbies online maybe too if you want to play against real people.
