SNES games are designed to be stretched to 4:3.
>>
>>322432935
What's the technical reason that the NES/SNES output at such a strange ratio? Why would Nintendo design the output to intentionally be stretched like that?

when they're competent enough to take in consideration that the 8:7 game they're working on will be stretched to 4:3, it's a different story.

But a lot of games didn't care, even first party games didn't care. pic related.

Gets worse when you realize the X axis is faster than the Y axis.

>>322436043
the japanese have squinted eyes so 8:7 looks like 4:3 to them. They didn't catch it until too late in development.

Can't we just agree that it depends on the game? Some games were designed 1:1, some games were designed to compensate for 4:3 stretching. Since no game gives you the option to set it, the only sane choice is to set it based on the game you're playing

1/7 0.1428
1/3 0.3333

8/7 = 1.1428
4/3 = 1.3333

Aka you don't know math mate.
>>
>>322432935
I can kind of appreciate what you're presenting, OP. As a digital artist, I have to make sure my monitor is at a proper ratio. Otherwise, I could be drawing squished or stretched drawings without realizing. So it's important to break out the ruler and measure carefully.

So I'm not as quick to think you're some gigantic asshole for pointing this out. However... I'm not completely convinced that it matters much for video games. Wouldn't it matter more what the authentic console+tv setup provided?
>>
>>322432935
I play retro games at 1080p at a 16:9 aspect ratio, and I'm not even kidding. on a PS3

He said autists right?
>>
Oh god the horror! Everything is slightly wider who could have done such a thing as this!
>>
>>322440194
>I'm not completely convinced that it matters much for video games.
It matters a lot because it's 2d games being stretched horizontally. top-down games like zelda are majorly affected by this because it appears that you're moving left/right faster than you move up/down. whereas in 8:7 it's the same. directly interfering with a game's physics.

>Wouldn't it matter more what the authentic console+tv setup provided?
The problem is the console's internal ratio is 8:7 stretched to 4:3. A lot of games were designed as 8:7 and didn't compensate for 4:3.

4:3 is the OAR of all SNES games.

Developers intentions don't matter. Perfect circles don't matter.

There is only what is accurate, and what is not. 4:3 is accurate.
